We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Bluebird, Steve Calvert.
Steve impressed in local football and in our Reserves before making his senior debut in January 1972, going on to score 7 goals in 47 games.
Our condolences are with Steve’s family and friends.

That's a real shocker, Steve was possibly the youngest amongst our team in that fateful 1971-72 season. He must have only been late 60's when passing away??? I thought he was some prospect. There was one match round about March 1972 (yep, half a century on now) - - - I think it might have been against Gillingham but can't remember for sure - - - where he slalomed around four opponents in the middle of the park and unleashed a drive from about 25 yards that cannoned off the upright at the Steelworks End. It was a breathtaking run that didn't get its just reward. Of course he was one of just four or five players who stayed with us as we dropped into the NPL and I think he only played about half a season until, sadly, he disappeared from view (injured, as mentioned in post above by Behind The Goals) - - - to emerge where, I'm not sure, but probably back into local football. I repeat, he was some prospect. RIP.

Sorry to read this.
My memories of Steve were from athletics at school he was representing Westshore on Walney and I was running for my school St Aloysius, it was the inter schools cross country I was leading in the final straight and he pipped me at the tape, the strange thing was we had to give our name and date of birth after the race and here I can answer the question of how old Steve was, we shared a birthday 2nd April 1952 so he just missed his 70th.
Memories last forever. Good guy R.I.P.

I remember Steve being the star of the Greengate United team that played Manchester United in a charity game at Holker Street. United had just signed centre half Gordon McQueen, a Scottish international who was to mark Calvert. Steve took it upon himself to forewarn McQueen in the press that he was good in the air and even better on the ground.
Anyone else remember that game?

Yes, Gary, did it finish 0-4? What year will that have been, 1977 perhaps? I suppose if I knew my Man Utd's and my Gordon McQueens I would be able to tell you - - - but I don't and I can't! Funnily enough I can't remember that Steve Calvert played in that match but I do seem to recall another Steve (Moon) in goals for Greengate. Additionally, I can't remember Gordon McQueen playing at Holker Street that night (though I can remember him stood in the queue at the "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" ride at Walt Disney World in May 1980 with Bryan Robson (and, just to add to the confusion, not the Brian Robson of Man Utd fame but the Bryan "Pop" Robson from the same era - - - that was the Bryan "Pop" Robson of Sunderland fame - - - or was it Newcastle???). Very memorially murky this!

Been a really tough week for everybody that knows him. Attached is a picture when he played for Holker reserves. I think We won the Furness premier that year. This would have been after Greengate merged with Holker. One game that particularly stands out at that season was an away game at Windscale. They’d just come out of another league that incorporated North East sides and were a very good outfit. This was more or less a league decider and I was captain at the time and got told we’d be playing a lad from the Juniors. I Wasn’t happy at the time as they had a centre back that was an absolute brute. I had recollections of him a couple of decades before in a Barrow boys v Cumberland Under 14’s and he had a beard then.It was an education watching Cally torment this guy. In his ear and elbows for 90 minutes. I think we drew the game which was great result up their. The young lad I was worried about had a great game. A kid called Neil Doherty!.After that game I think he played for the 1st team a couple of times and then straight off to be a Pro! Also in the attached picture is a young Mark Ebbo! I’ve known Cally for over 55 years and He was a great friend and character. We had a get together last Tuesday in the Kings and 16 of us had got together at short notice to go out with an old pal who was up from London. Great craic as usual with Cally on great form. When we said our goodbyes at around 11,little did we know it would be the last time we saw him. Absolutely Gutted when I got the call the following morning. RIP Cally

Yes, I remember that goal well. I think that was the first game after the Steelworks End roof was removed.
Steve also scored our last ever Football League goal at Holker Street (until last season of course) in a 2-0 win against Workington in April 1972.
He was a great prospect and it's a pity he never got chance to develop further in the FL with us. RIP.
