Another old photo
Not a particularly memorable one, but I thought it worth posting given its age - this one is from before even I was born! It is from the Evening Mail edition of November 8th 1950, which I found a while ago lining a packing case in my mother's attic. The front page headline was all about US superfortresses bombing the cr@p out of Korea, but of course I eagerly searched the pages looking for a mention of Barrow AFC, and found this. Anyone on this forum remember as far back as this?

According to 'Gardner' the player is WR (Billy) Lee. There is no mention of an Albert Lee ever playing for us.philmac wrote:Would that be Albert Lee in the Barrow line-up?
If so I'm sure he worked in the AED in the 'yard when I was there - I also remember it took me about two years to pluck up the courage to talk to him and, of course, to ask what it felt like to play for the best team in the world!
Up the Ziggers.
Re: Another old photo
Interesting article, Xerxes. I just love it when little bits of our history pop up and come briefly back to life, even if it does relate to a time before we were born. This had me scampering for my Michael Gardner book, the excellent "The Definitive Barrow AFC".
It appears we drew the match referred to against Gateshead on November 11th. It ended 1-1, with a guy called G.King scoring our goal. It seems this G.King bagged quite a few for us. The attendance was 6061.
Looking at that time period, I see a couple of interesting landmark moments at around about that time. It appears that the legendary local sportsman, Eddie Miller, DIDN'T play in that Gateshead match and in fact made just one more appearance for us a couple of weeks later. It's all before my time but I'm well aware that Eddie was quite a revered figure for us, and also in local cricket circles. Also, just two or three months after that Gateshead match I see that Andy McLaren made his debut for us. I know it used to be quite a popular opinion that McLaren was possibly the best player ever to play for us.
George Forbes was by all accounts a rock-hard centre half for us; his son, also George, used to run BG Sports in town, and as far as I know George Junior still lives in Barrow.
Phil - - - the "Lee" would seem to be a W.R.Lee according to the book. I think we had a Bill Lee that played for us around that time period.
Finally, I see that New Brighton finished bottom of Div 3 North in that season, 1950-51, and that appears to be the last we ever saw of them as a Football League side.

You have reminded me, as an old fart, that I once played golf at Barrow GC in the 60s with 3 Barrow players - Bobby Tait, Keith Eddy and, I think, Brian Arrowsmith. I do remember that they played golf as they did football - Tait was all delicate shots and very neat, Eddy and Arra (if it was him) were booming the ball miles and spraying it all over the place!philmac wrote: Without starting to sound like an old fart I remember playing cricket against Eddie Miller for Askam against Ulverston on a few occasions - he made Chris Tavare look like Kevin Pietersen!!

Re: Another old photo
I just saw a Miller mentioned in Ralph's 2855 newsletter and wondered if it was Eddie. Google brought me to this thread. Funnily enough I remember George Forbes well but not Bolum. It is a pity that memory goes with age as I don't recollect the goal keeper either.

This 1949/50 photo keeps some of the faces alive and both Lee and Forbes are shown. Jimmy Collins who played wing half once came up to the grammar school around 1953 to coach us in the gym. I was around 14, if this was the year.
Some of the same players are shown on two later team photos from 1954/5

I see Jack Hindle is the goalie on all the photographs. The only other I remember from those days was Roxborough
Steve in Texas

Re: Another old photo
Thanks for sharing these photos.
One of the players in the first photograph - Wilf Livingstone - had a long association with Barrow AFC; after his playing days were over he served from the mid 1950s as Secretary and Administration Manager until the club lost its Football League place in 1972. After then, he kept a keen eye on the club's affairs as a supporter, and was instrumental in the establishment of the NSC.
From the second & third photos, I can just about remember Jack Keen as a player. Many of the other names are familiar (including Billy Gordon, of course) but I can't say that I recall seeing any of them play; I probably did see them, but was too young at the time to remember.

The Grammar School 1st XI 1958 is interesting. Back row on the left is Jackie Maddison, who went on to play a few games for Barrow as an "amateur", as they were called then. I believe he once caused a bit of a stir by refusing on religious grounds to play on Good Friday. Middle row far right is, I think, Kevin(?) Morrell who also played for the Barrow, possibly not for the first team. The sports master at the front is Joe Birrell, who has recently featured in the Sunday Times and other papers as a 1948 Olympics competitor.
Would the handsome team captain be Texas Steve himself? Some other faces I think I recognise - middle row far left, was he called Fogarty, and middle of the middle row, is that Kev Speakman?

Re: Another old photo
A little before my time that article. However, I had the privilege, some years ago, of meeting George King at a holiday camp in the south. When he heard I was from Barrow he introduced himself and reminisced about his time at Holker Street remarking that he very much enjoyed his time at Barrow. It does sound like he scored a fair few goals for us.
