Funny kinda game that. Very open. In the first half we were clearly the better team but played without tempo or urgency so I was far from surprised when Kettering grabbed a goal just before the interval - in fact I forecast it as those sat around me will testify.

Second half we knocked it around well, particularly the last 20 minutes when we created chance after chance. Boyes and Cook were a good double act and I lost count of their shots. James Owen was through against the keeper but snatched his shot, Boyes scuffed a shot when also one-on-one and stuffed up another two opportunities - one he allowed to run out for a goal kick, another he allowed the keeper to smother.

Later in the game when the Barrow team realised they were miles better than Kettering there was loads of running and dribbling through the Poppies - including two extraordinary runs by YJO. The stats on the BBC website don't lie - 19 shots from the lads and Kettering really aught to have been buried, and but for a point blank save by their keeper from a late Cooky shot they could well have been.

Happy for Boyes to finish (bar next week) the season off with a goal, that's been sometime coming but he deserved it for playing through his injury last week.
Two or three next week would be nice.

Well at least i've now seen a point at Nene Park (which as usual was freezing even before it chucked it down). Last three visits we conceded 4,4 and 5.

Apart from Cambridge away (where we played well) i haven't seen the team during this current slump until today. I though it was ironic that although for the first time in 4 years we didn't have the threat of relegation hanging over us, we tended to play with the confidence of a team fighting relegation. Up front we looked light years better than Kettering but over-elaborated, misplaced passes, made poor decisions when around their box. The stats will show that we had many more chances and the bulk of these were on target. Reports will say their keeper had a red letter day - but the facts were that until the goal everything was hit straight at him. Three months ago we'd have won this fixture by 2 or 3 clear goals. Having said that i didn't think there was a lot wrong with Macareth, Cook, Boyes and Rutherford today. Am very happy Boyes scored also.

In midfield we looked better coming forward than when being attacked and on too many occasions they found themselves short of numbers on the counter attack. Defensively I can understand why DB has been doing the rain dance about the back four. Todays selection worked hard but most of Ketterings dangerous moments either came from set pieces or from the middle of the park. One-on-One the back four looked OK but as a unit they ressembled a leaking bucket. Can someone please tell me what position Moyo was actually playing. At times he seemed to be playing ahead of the defensive line and almost in midfield - but not quite. Its no wonder he continually found himself the wrong side of his attacker.

On the whole though I think losing like winning becomes a habit. Am not seriously worried about this carrying forward into next season and once Boyes has scored we looked to have a different attitude completely. We have not become a c**p team but do look like a tired one.

I look at it this way; four years ago Kettering, Barrow, Eastbourne and Lewes were promoted to the Conference Premier. We are now officially the last man standing . What odds could we have got on that?

What sanddevil said really ^^^^

First half was poor from both sides but you could see we were slightly less poor but predictably we conceded. It looked like two teams very low on confidence and some of the football was comical to be honest with so many misplaced passes and shanked clearances. I did wonder if they would run out of balls before the end as several disappeared over various stands(and they aren't the smallest at Nene Park)

Second half was a much improved display and we deservedly got the goal from Boyes (who had nothing else go right in the game though the effort was clearly there). We should have had a second and possibly more but it wasn't to be today and was pleased that the players made the effort to give good appreciation to the away support of 82 at the end.

Skelts was MOTM for me and was the one showing leadership on the pitch - he is a must to keep and install as skipper next season. Keep Boyes, Cook, Hurst, Owen, possibly Mackreth and Rutherford - the rest I wouldn't be too worried about.

Cracking day out with the London brigade as usual - cheers lads and will see you all next season if not before.

Just a thought, but in Rushden and now Kettering, Nene Park has seen two different clubs relegated from the Conference in successive seasons. Must be some sort of record.

Yes - not Conference standard by any means. A notional right back but in reality no idea of positional play and frequently went missing. I suspect he played purely because there wasn't much for us to play for today. Dunno where Paul Smith was today - injured?

Also, I wasn't too inspired by Danny Hurst today. Stayed on his line way too much, almost like he's lost his confidence since Wealdstone, and not helped by the kick in the head he got in the second half. Be interesting for those going next week to see whether that trend continues.
