Ultras Barrovia

Post by DaveP » Fri Feb 15, 2013 11:49 am

Did this group play a huge part in our success over the last few years and has their demise had a very real effect on our home performances this year?

This is not to have a go or to in any way blame them or detract from the poor team we have but to applaud the great effect they had at the time and how much we miss them as a club.

Discuss??

I always loved the displays and thought they created a fantastic atmosphere! Would love to see them back!

The Ultras displays were hugely popular with the players. No matter where we went there were flags, colour and noise. The one that still stands out in my mind is the first game v Northwich. It was a sea of blue and white. ( tell me I'm right ) it's no fun getting old.

I can understand why the displays stopped as the time , effort and expense must have been considerable. To run out at Holker Street and be met by the flags and banners must have been superb.

I really hope the Ultras could be resurrected .... They made us feel special.

I hope we can give the fans something to cheer about! The atmosphere of the Luton home game was terrific, wonderful support, lots of noise. I, as well as anyone, realise there hasn't been too much to cheer this season at home. But I can tell you the players do react to the support.

I am full of admiration for every single supporter who hands over their hard earned cash and supports the club. It can't be easy at times, but its never boring!

I've gone on too long and might get in bother but I for one thought the Ultras project was marvellous . Thanks Barry Pos. :UB: :UB:

The displays used to be fantastic. To be fair theres not many clubs at our level that create a good atmosphere at home, away fans are usually better (mainly due to alcohol intake!)

I personally miss the cololur, the humour, (I'll never forget the Submarine/Longship banner when we played York City) :D and the atmosphere they generated at HS.

I think all our supporters have played a part in our success over recent seasons. The Ultras were certainly more vocal!

I don't think their demise has had a detrimental effect on this season's home performances. I think our problems are far more deep rooted.

Passionate support can lift a team to great heights. The (old) Stretford End and Celtic Park being just two examples. The Ultras didn't have the strength in numbers to make that much difference to OUR performances, IMO. Sadly, probably one of the reasons for their demise.

GET THEM BACK, c'mon lads help the team over the final third of the season, as BP say's it was appreciated by the players & must lift them.

Fantastic displays & noise in previous seasons, it's got to help.

We can knock up a good sized work bench in the MA for you for any work you want to do on the flags & banners & we'll put up shelving to store it all.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

The Ultras haven't disappeared from the ground, they've just stopped calling themselves Ultras Barrovia due to the lack of time needed to maintain that level of organisation at every game and some of the numbers not being able to attend as many games: I think (although I can't speak for those concerned) that they didn't want to keep calling themselves Ultras Barrovia when they didn't feel they were doing the "Ultras" idea justice, through no fault of their own other than a lack of time to commit.

That said, most of the same people are still at games, still singing, and they're a friendly bunch: if anyone wants to put some effort into make banners and marshalling people to hold them (You'll need a few hours at a time to make the banners, and to arrive at games early/leave late to organise them and tidy up) then I'm fairly confident you'll find people willing to hold them up for you. It won't be UB08, and it probably shouldn't try to be, but if a couple of people have the time/effort to put in to create similar colour at the games I highly doubt the artist formerly known as UB will object.

Chances are you know at least a couple of them anyway - go stand with them, maybe take a few banners and do some singing.

It's pretty much as audigex says. But the majority of Barrow's vocal support and many good friends have been there before UB08 and are still there, as are we. The core of the support, many in the ISC are still there.

The best the support has been at home this season was when everyone got into it second half versus Luton, drink was a factor- much of this was down to people who were doing it 10 years ago, way before UB08, with us, and younger lads to.. In the next few games we need more of this, but all the folk who like to come on here and talk about the old days, who are no older than me, could help by lending their voices again too. Each in their own way though;)

Times change. Roughly, of the 10 original folk that we started with, 2 went away to Uni, 1 emigrated, 2 got more responsibilty with children/houses and one of them moved away, 2 or 3 involved were banned, though some are back and even Ste went abroad for a spell. Lots of other great people were involved, over the years we have probably had about 40 people in one way or another, but only all together a very few times. If all the people in this march could have gone every week..Like you say, strength in numbers..What we did do very well was represent the town visually, a lot of the lads have a deep feeling for this and it showed in our hard work.

I'm not going to bore on about what ultras really means, but it isn't just displays, it represents a way of life and belief, and although we were more than decent for a small club in the U.K, we couldn't get quite get there. We're not going to turn into some 'wacky' Stevenage, Morecambe or Fleetwood style support- ripping of continental chants wholesale and banging a drum- there are two decent groups in the U.K- at Celtic and Crystal Palace, and one half decent..Motherwell, who we got quite near at times and if we'd had a bit more success on the park might have emulated.

In the future I hope the young lads get hold of it and do their own thing.

As to the present, well we have had small displays of sorts here and there- we had a few flags and the crest at Southport. There is nothing to stop folk getting stuff from under the stand (what's left..) and giving it a go.

Let's just get together and crack on. Decent backing tomorrow could give the lads a lift, and we need the points that's for sure.

The ultras represent life and a way of means?? Come on barrowaberdeen, really?
Are you mental?
The ultras I remember we're a bunch of kids dressed in stone island gear trying to act like hooligans. Infact some of the ultras members were proper tits and I suppose this was reflected in their bans. Throwing objects onto the pitch, especially flarres is not clever. The last away game I went was Chester away a few seasons back and the attitude and actions of some of the so called barrow fans was embarrassing. I won't go away now as I found it embarrassing being a barrow fan (and this was when we could win a game so not embarrassing on the pitch)
Barrow fans have never had a proper squad since the barrow boot boys, now they were tough and didn't have to act and pretend to be the big men!
My personal feeling for the ultras ending is that most of the kids who made the ultras up have grown up and can't be bothered making tits of themselves!

I've said it several times months ago.

What they did over the past 4 years were superb, both lifting the team, and making Holker Street a tougher place to collect points for the visitors.

It isn't any individuals fault, as Steve said many of people had more/new commitments.

When the fans get behind the team, it's fact they play better. Luton especially a big example this year. :UB:

Poor effort in fact. Bell end.

What barrowaberdeen said is perfect. I am one of the folk who moved away and miss dearly the group and what it stood for. Toko has obviously done his research on we did, although he seems to know a lot about kids. Also his last game was Chester away so hes up to date with stuff.

The march was immense, 2/3 cars full of folk driving round Barrow putting flyers up to get people involved. It worked. Hanging over the bridge near animal park putting banners up, painting Colty burning Fleetwood pier down, the crooks - Dave Inghams idea of brown envelopes for the fat [SwearFilter] and the banner for SV!! All great - BUT YOU [swear filter]TOKO were not done by kids in stone island gear, they were done by people who give a damn about the town and club they love, to create something extra at HS.

I suggest you check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultras

Miss it. Will do again. UB08 - proud to be a part of history.
