Their fans were getting searched before going through the turnstiles too. After reading all about today's game and being there as well as an atherstone supporter for 50 years I was ashamed at the half time scenes at my football ground ! Barrow came to our town to play football and football they played, much the better side and won quite easily as they should have !They brought with them supporters who spent money in our town and came to enjoy an away win in the fa cup.Out of a gate of about 900 supporters home and away 20 or30 decided to spoil the day. I was in the main stand and heard true adders fans shouting go away you don't belong here to the people pictured on here and elsewhere running towards and assaulting the barrow fans.The photos do not lie so the culprits are there to see and be punished ! All I can say as a football fan is sorry and good luck in the next round barrow!

Found it odd that at gate for Barrow Fans lady was told couldn't bring her umberella in ground ,yet inside the Atherstone supporters behind goal all had umberellas

It's always easy to ask questions after but I was frisked before entering ground at the home end and the bar stopped serving at 2-45 pm but why we're the stewards (who had Ricoh arena jackets on) so not from atherstone not by the area behind the dugouts where the trouble if any was going to come from? As to where the police were well who knows the answer to that one.

I know it's not the fault of all your fans, but your club have [SwearFilter] up and should be punished. You say they shut the bar but the first picture in this link taken after half time shows what look like lager cans on top of the dug out. Attended the game today with my youngest daughter, easy location to get to from Euston with direct and economically priced trains. The settlement of Atherstone does have a bit a reputation in Warwickshire and beyond and its attractive and inviting veneer (historic marketplace, flight of locks on the Coventry Canal, plush gaffs near the railway station) disguises something of a rotten underbelly.
It was pretty lively in town when we arrived with some of the inebriated locals allegedly creating a 'carnival' atmosphere by lobbing flares at and under vehicles and generally indulging in high jinks. What is remarkable is that nobody involved in the practical application of public order appears to have put two and two together and made any sort of connection between these activities and the day's big football game at Sheepy Road. Certainly, Warwickshire's finest were in attendance at the party at this particular point as their colourful and eye-catching vehicles were about in abundance and it appears that general access to the area hosting the on-going celebrations, if needed, was being denied to the public at large. No doubt on reflection, if the day's events are taken seriously, it will be seen as a probable mis-calculation by the agents of control to allow these socially-challenged rogues to transfer their all day party, lock stock and barrel, in the direction of the local sporting arena.
Our arrival at the ground resulted in a careful search by a steward of my daughter's bag (looking for cans was the reason given) prior to being allowed entry by a lovely lady working the turnstile. We bumped into her later on and she was genuinely devastated by the events that were to unfold at half-time. Prior to kick-off (in the footballing context) around ten red flares were ignited across the pitch on the opposite terrace. An incandescent blue one brought brief shadow to the section allocated to, in view of recent negativity surrounding the club, the surprisingly decent- sized Barrow support. One red flare was also ignited in or close to the ground's social club.
Right, let's get on with the game. Expecting the home team to come out of the blocks at high speed, it proved to be more than a pleasant surprise when the early onslaught failed to materialise and the Barrow team, playing in yellow, possibly in homage to the potential banana skin, took control and subsequently rammed in four goals. In the meantime, red flares continued to be ignited throughout the first half, three were in fact thrown on to the field during passages of play. The referee ignored or was not made aware of them and certainly the linesmen or fourth official made no attempt to bring his attention to the on-pitch pyrotechnics.
The number of flares that were set off during the first half was mind-boggling and both the home terrace and behind the goal which the AFC was attacking were witness to the almost constant red mist. It caused someone to quip that maybe there was a firework manufacturing cooperative in the area and with the number of 'cultural' events held locally over the years, there may or may not be something in this. It certainly made us think though as to how the day's carnival-goers managed to get such incredibly large amounts of fireworks into the ground if everybody was subject to the same type of search as my daughter. The answer, of course, is that they weren't.
Not only did the match officials ignore the burning flares on the field of play, the stewards also ignored the almost constant ignition of these smoking phallic symbols throughout the first 45 minutes. Our understanding post-match was that one local female fan stood in that area had convulsions as a result of the amount of smoke discharged though this was unconfirmed. The bottom line in all of this was that a group of inebriated and dysfunctional blokes with wannabe young lads hanging on to their scruffy coat tails became braver and braver as the half progressed because nobody was prepared to make a decision to say enough is enough and intervene. There were no scuffers about at this point and if there were, there was certainly no interest in getting involved. The stewards appeared to abdicate themselves of any responsibility until it was too late and as the half time whistle was blown the monkeys scrambled through the wide-open cage door, confident in themselves that as they had pushed it so far, they could push it even further. What then followed was nigh on inevitable and full testament to the laissez-faire policy on crowd (sic) control.
Rather than nip this in the bud, the whole thing was allowed to fester and grow into a series of linked events that subsequently exploded into a display of wanton violence directed against people who were at the ground to watch football and not get involved in a scrap or defend themselves against a salivating mob of scruffy, thoroughly unpleasant dullards. The mobile snack bar provided for visiting supporters was hit by a randomly thrown flare during the interval too and the owner quickly closed up and left, no doubt fearing his business may go up in flames. Thinking it was a brick at first as we queued for a drink, we moved down the back of the ground, not fully aware of the incursion into the 'segregated' (sic) Barrow terrace. We then heard what I at first thought was two individuals arguing and scrapping in a toilet. It turned out that the 'toilet' was in fact the players tunnel and we witnessed some lunatic in his thirties or forties being forced out of the area with a pole in one hand and one of those children's scooters in the other, both items seemingly being used or threatening to be used as weapons.
On the field, the second half was understandably a damp squib and both teams went through the motions to complete a game of football that saw Barrow win by four, first half goals without reply. The club and fans can now look forward to the 4th Qualifying Round draw on Monday as well as a welcome boost of £7.5k into the bank account. This will be a handy bonus if there are creditors knocking loudly on the Holker Street front door.
The resultant publicity following the unsavoury events of today will compel the Warwickshire plod to act and I suspect quite a few of Atherstone's residents will be worrying about that early morning knock once tomorrow's hangovers clear. These people will not be watching Atherstone United next week and may not return for a long time unless another big game crops up or potential banning orders expire. In the meantime, the local volunteers and fans that showed us decency and hospitality today will still be there trying to underpin their home town football club about which they care passionately.

One Ricoh steward told me he would never go to Atherstone ground again ......shows how in common with a lot of stewards they are, not capable of dealing with crowd disturbances.Thanks for info re your frisking

I'm afraid Rob Williams was kind of dropped in it at the last minute as the 606 people rang after everyone else had got off at Junction 19.

I must be a bit of a wuss because I found the whole experience quite frightening today. I honestly thought someone was going to get seriously injured.
It is such a shame as well because i suspect like lots of clubs they have some really nice people involved in it - the club obviously made mistakes today and didn't do everything it could to ensure things went smoothly - fans were searched as they entered the ground and the lady on the turnstyle was very nice and friendly - I went for a nice day our a bit of banter and to see a game of football - but I am upset by what happened - hope everyone got home safely.

Just after the start of the 2nd half I asked, whom I had be informed was their, 'Head' steward as he walked past what was happening to the those who had 'come over'? He replied that half of them had been arrested and the majority of the rest despatched from the ground. I have since found out that no arrests had been made!
the integrity of Atherstone Town FC must serioulsy be called into question due to the major incidents today - if the FA does not doing anything then they should be called into question.
I also had my bag checked and the same reason given - if I had any cans - should of said no - no cans but loads of flares that can seriously injure someone and I will share around and give to kids so they can run around with them and throw them up in the air - mind you that was the only time the stewards went over to any flares!!
