Once that stopped, then his performances went downhill.

Presumably he isn't getting paid at Gateshead then as he was rubbish when they came here and hasn't been good enough to play many games for them.
He wouldn't have been the only one not getting paid but some of the others did make an attempt to play-- Atherton was his shame.

I'd have Boyes back in a heartbeat.

If, as people are suggesting, he did stop trying, consider the following.

He was owed wages. He was owed bonuses. He was playing for an arsehole. He was being played out of position to accommodate Danny L Rowe.

Anyone here who can say that they haven't just gone through the motions at sometime or other when they have been [SwearFilter] off at work is either a saint, or a liar.

For the majority of his time with us he ran his guts out and put away plenty of the meagre amount of chances he was provided with.

If one was to accept that to be true, then something changed towards the end of 2012 and experience at Gateshead this season suggests that it may not have been the items you allege. (If so he would have had a point to make in our pre-season friendly. It didn't seem to be so.)

I was brought up in a generation after the war to look on life that way by both teachers---instilled in us "if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well"--and my hard working parents.

As for Boyes--having travelled to the first game at Alfreton and it was called off because of fog and then travelled again, to learn of someone not attempting to play makes me hope he runs around forever without scoring a single goal wherever he is.
