Regarding Gilmour it was him with the diving header Colne away wasnt it?

I remember looking at them two at 9/10 years old thinking they were old men!!

nice to relive memories like this.

I remember i was in Florida when Euro 96 was on and me and my dad bumped into Lee Copland in a bar, think he was with Slater (Paul?) otherwise known as Slats?

Think my dad worked with one (or both) of them.

Thinking about it i went out on the [SwearFilter] with "Slats" in Bowness years ago!!! Is that the same lad who played for Holker ?

That was some team eh? As for the substitutes...certainly Billy Gilmour and Ian Burgess were on the bench, along with Lee Copeland, but I'm not sure Gary Messenger made the squad. Certainly Stuart Todhunter and Jim Capstick missed out, and I think "Messer" was also unlucky, although I stand to be corrected. All three of them travelled with the squad though. I liked Messer - he was a very useful footballer (for a Marra...) and could play centre forward or centre back. Could look after himself. If only we had someone like Sir Ray in charge now - someone who could make a phone call and magic up a good footballer from the north east almost at will. Not the greatest tactician but had a "way" with players which made them play above themselves for him. Yeah, I know...times have changed etc....

Well maybe somethings changed mate but is it times? Or just us as a club and town? Obviously players wanted to play for Barrow then, we were a sleeping giant my old fella used to tell me. Surely the players are out there but we need to get the man to do it?

Where was Stuart Todhunter(sp?) at this point? Am i too early?

One thing about the Wilkie years that sometimes gets overlooked was just how many local players he used in his teams. Yes, he did have a conveyor belt of top quality Geordie players (Wheatley, Carroll, Higgins, Lowe, Harrison, Hulse, Ferris, Vincent, to name but a few) but the nucleus of most of Wilkie's teams was either Barrow-based or at least Cumbria based. Take the Trophy winning squad: McDonnell (Kendal) Chilton (West Cumbria) Gordon (Barrow) Skivington (Barrow) Gilmour (West Cumbria) Proctor (Barrow) Cowperthwaite (Flookburgh) Doherty (Barrow) Burgess (Barrow) Copeland (Barrow). Peripheral players around the same time - Messenger, Todhunter (both West Cumbria), Capstick (Barrow). Wilkie also gave plenty of game time to the likes of Colin Woodburn and Stuart Mason (both Ulverston) as well as goalkeeper Dave Knowles, who was also a Furness-based lad. I'm pretty sure there were others I haven't mentioned. Yes, Barrow won the FA Trophy at Wembley and competed in the Conference with mostly local players....an interesting idea. Could that be done nowadays ....? Probably not.
