Mick Richmond

Heard the sad news last night from former Barrow AFC manager Micky Taylor that one time Barrow AFC full back Mick Richmond has passed away. Mick was a tremendous player for us back in the late 70's/early 80's and never gave less than 100%. He always played with a smile on his face and was very much a part of the vastly improved Barrow side that did so much to erase the bad memories of our struggles during the 1970s. Condolences to his family. RIP Mick

How very sad. An absolute 100 per center for us and a gutsy player with a trick or two. He won't be forgotten in these parts that's for sure. Thanks for the memories Mickey and my sincere condolences to his family. Anybody got any more information about Mickey's passing please post it up and it would be nice to see some kind of tribute at tomorrow's game. Taken the wind right out of my sails tonight that has.

Sad news indeed. I remember Mick very fondly - he was in the team when my then girlfriend (now wife) first started following Barrow back in 1981. Mick at right-back and Barry Knowles at left-back were the two players who really made an early impression on me. I also remember that fabulous strike against Man City. RIP fella.

Sad and shocking news, Mick can't have been any great age.

Agreed that his goal against Man City was unforgettable. Another memory was from our very first Conference (Alliance) match in Sept 1979 against Yeovil when Mick had a hand in what I think was our first ever goal in that league. A corner at the Steelworks End (there was no Crossbar building then, just an empty space) was played short to Mick at right-back and he swung in a curling cross that was met with a diving header into the top corner by Cowps.

Mick was a very good full-back. Condolences to all family and friends.

People remember Mick for that thunderbolt against City,I remember getting a similar one off him on the bonce when I was a ball boy.
Knocked me bandy for a short while and being the kind of bloke he was he came & sought me after the game to check I was ok.(then preceeded to give me a bit of stick about it knocking some sense in to me for the rest of season.)
Reading this has knocked me a bit bandy again.

Curious after seeing PJ Daly's "dig" on the Lowestoft thread I decided to see what I could find online in way of tributes from Mick's other clubs, given the only one from our club was Phil Yelland's column in yesterday's programme.

It appears the news of Mick's passing has taken almost a year to reach us. According to http://announce.jpress.co.uk/32427603-o ... chael-mick and http://announce.jpress.co.uk/32670939-a ... k-richmond (assuming I have the right person, although the geographical area would be roughly right) he died on 11th November last year after a 4 year illness. There is a photo on one of the links above, perhaps one of you that remembers him playing might be able to see if there is a resemblance?

There doesn't appear to be anything form any of his other clubs online that I could find, perhaps news of his passing has not been shared very widely among the footballing community?
