In response to pjdaly's above comment (I can't be bothered to quote it), we didn't play Hartlepool in 1969/70 because they had indeed been relegated the previous season after just one year in Div Three.

That would be sometime in the mid-1950s. I do know that we had a box at the ground, for me to stand on so that I could see over the wall.

I was first allowed to go to Holker Street without parental supervision when I was seven, providing a "big lad" (who was no more than ten) looked after us.

My first away game was to Rochdale for the FA Cup match on 26th November 1966, where we won 3-1 thanks to goals from Tony Field (2) and Roy McCarthy; we travelled on a "Shopping trip" coach run by Hadwins at a cost of 12/6 (62 1/2p) because it gave us longer in the town than the supporters' coach. And no I don't know why we wanted to spend more time than necessary in Rochdale!

Perhaps, November next year, I should celebrate half a century of away travel?
Was at that Rochdale game. Dave Storf scored the Rochdale goal, later of course to become a star at HS.

That Rochdale FA Cup game was my first ever Barrow AFC match. I can still remember to this day walking up to the ground so excited that at last I was going to see Barrow play. Tony Field and George Smith were wonderful that day and really stood out but it has to be said that this was without doubt one of the best ever Barrow teams - probably beaten into first place by the team fashioned by Colin Appleton that took us ever so briefly to the top of the old Third Division.
Now a replica shirt from that period would be fantastic

Plain white crew neck T shirt from M&S and a royal blue permanent marker to colour the hems of the neck and sleeves should just about cover it.

No badge, no copyright - easy one one for the Supporters' Trust to produce and the possibility of a 400% profit margin. Sorted.

Did Field and Smith play in the same side? Had it in my mind's eye that Smith had been shipped out before Field came in. Both top players in their day who would be contenders for an all-time Barrow XI.

They both played in the 66-67 season, Smith scoring between September and April while Field scored between October and April.
