Why no substitute keeper on the bench?

Post by mulholland » Sat Feb 14, 2015 8:19 pm

I might have missed something in the Mail or websites regarding this issue but there was no substitute keeper on the bench today. How many matches has this been the case? It's simply unacceptable at this level not to have a reserve keeper on the bench. Is McMillan injured and if so why hasn't Edmondson got a replacement in? Anyone know something I don't?
Think Bayliss overlooked this matter as well and we ended up with Flynn, the right-back, in goal for most of one unmemorable home defeat and looked what happened to him Darren...

On the subject of Keepers. Is it Taylor or Mcmillan as the No 1 ?

Its McMillan for me

McMilllan, overall experience and his shot stopping gives him the edge for the run in imho.

Taylor...not because he is good but because McMillan has been so poor.
Any incoming players from this point need to be defenders, keeper or def mid. We are lacking everywhere except left back at the moment.

According to the BBC RC commentators it's because one or two of the outfield players told the manager they were quite happy to go in goal if it came to it.
It all comes 'round again.

We never have a sub keeper on bench, personally I always would but I'm not a manager.
In regards to Tony mcmillan yes he's lost his pace but he's always there before games helping Taylor warm up
. So shows he's a team player and only wants best for us whether he's playing or not.

McMillan was taken to one side by Edmo before the game at Oxford and had a quiet word with - presumably told he was dropped that day and hasn't featured since. McMillan did make mistakes in the matches leading up to that game but before that did OK. Overall as to being better than Taylor I think he'd just shade it for me as I'd question whether Taylor is strong enough to command his area sufficiently and seems very quiet with regard to talking to the defence in front of him?
I guess if Taylor had a bad spell then McMillan would be back as I've seen him at the games since then so I don't think its anything sinister, as we have such a large squad not all players can get on the bench even though they may be fit to play.

I don't think Macca has done too much wrong and is perfectly fine at this level, I'd prefer him between the sticks for the run-in.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Two shots one the 1st goal against Fylde in that 2-1 defeat and 1-1 against Harrogate. Both shots where hit practically straight at him and he fumbled both letting them in. As mentioned above he was talked to and in that talk Edmo said that McMillan admitted his confidence was low and agreed with the managers decision, so he is clearly not upset but is not at his best, so he has been dropped for now.

Not totally disagreeing with the decision to drop him but my point is that over the season he hasn't done too much wrong, you've highlighted two....I could do the same with ANY player.

I don't think he has done much wrong either and but I don't think it is all to do with that either. If when discussing mistakes with a player he admits his confidence is low and he is making mistakes because if it would you still play him? I think he'll be back soon, Taylor is decent but does not command his area or instil the same confidence in players/supporters.

It was mentioned on one of the BBC RC sports programmes that they had noticed this and asked why. The explanation was as Nigel says. They said the players that are willing to go in goal are quite good at it as well. No names were mentioned.

Yeah but when your'e a keeper one mistake will cost you every keeper knows that. As mentioned by others he's had a few mistakes that have cost us, dramatic but the Fylde one could cost us the league! I think McMillan is average at best all he does is make standard saves a keeper at this level should make. He's no Tim Deasy or Alan Martin.
