Re: Atherston Matters
Sloppy, unprofessional "journalism", or cynical manipulation of the facts to grab the attention of a handful of extra buyers?....you decide. Whichever, the EM once again raise the bar of buffoonery. An embarrassment to this fine town of ours.

Re: Atherston Matters
My nearest clubs are Hampton & Richmond and Brentford. The local (weekly) rag might give a few column inches to each club - or it might not. It quite often doesn't even give the previous Saturday's score.spirit of 1990 wrote:Like the NWEM or not, the club are on the back page on a very regular basis, which then keeps it in a lot of people's minds.
And the other nearby clubs - Chelsea, Fulham, and QPR - don't even get a mention.

Re: Atherston Matters
Stories every night - special pull outs for big games - there won't be many non league clubs that get that much publicity anywhere else
Have a look at the Manchester evening news there won't be much about the local non league clubs
The EM gets to the places this site or the official one does not into the homes of potential new fans
Same with radio cumbria we moan but again these are few clubs we get full match commentary of games.

Yes, but this clearly isn't out of any love for the club. It's just to shift a few more copies of their shitty paper or to get a few more hits on the website. It's equally as cynical as idiocy like the Scholes headline or implicating Barrow fans in the Atherstone unpleasantness.Bingo wrote:Stories every night - special pull outs for big games - there won't be many non league clubs that get that much publicity anywhere else

Re: Atherston Matters
I liked the tongue-in-cheek Scholes headline and if it made some people pick up a copy of the paper that wouldn't normally do so it also than made more people aware of a charity football match being played at Holker Old Boys which is a good thing. I agree with Bingo that we get far more coverage from the NWEM and Radio Cumbria than most clubs at our level receive from their local papers and radio stations. As for cynical attempts to shift more copies; as a commercial enterprise they need to shift as many copies as possible to survive. All the National Press use similar tactics to suck readers in with spurious stories, lurid headlines and even naked flesh.

Stories everynight? LIke accused barrow afc fans discover final verdict in pitch disorder case? Half of the people here will at somepoint be slating the paper come this season. there stupidity does extend far beyond the football but that's a different story. hey. Perhaps i should make it up, print it onto 40,000 papers and distribute them around the furness peninsula then of course it'll be okay to LIE.

Go for it!
They didn't make the story up - they just got the headline wrong - if you think you can take on BBC Radio Cumbria and the evening mail and do a better job - good luck.
I slate the local paper as much as everyone else but on the whole they do an excellent job for the club and yes they do it to sell papers but that's what all papers do.
Back to Atherstone matters - I am for forgiveness but the events on the day left me a little disturbed and I do hope the punishment is, on this occasion, harsh. This wasn't a couple of gangs of idiots squaring up to each other and it getting out of hand it was an unprovoked attack on a group of people watching their home town club in a dark and dingy stand with no means of escape.

Re: Atherston Matters
Just my final word on the EL matter...it wouldn't make any difference if it printed every page full of Barrow AFC news. That's the point. It doesn't make any difference.
Do you imagine we get increased gates when the EL prints a story or an interview? IMO the only party that benefits from this 'relationship' is the EL itself. I feel that what they do has zero positive effect on the club. It is very frequently WILDLY inaccurate and often to the detriment of the club and it's supporters.
Anyway...

Re: Atherston Matters
I'm hardly taking on the evening mail or radio cumbria by highlighting their (the evening mail's) constant misleading headlines afc related and otherwise for financial gain!!! On that note I don't buy the papers nor do I wish them any well doing. That's my right. Secondly my idea to start a radio based purely on and related only too all things barrow AFC would not be in competition with radio cumbria But merely to add to the matchday aura surrounding the football that they otherwise don't provide perhaps because they don't have the time to do. A non profit, fun adventure if you will. In all honesty I will probably approach them for advice and support if it came to fruition.Bingo wrote:Go for it!

See a problem try to fix it. If you can't atleast you gave it a go.

Re: Atherston Matters
The second trial started today and I was due to give evidence however after sitting around for several hours we were sent home and asked to come back for 10am tomorrow morning. That's a day I will never get back. Our justice system does not move at the most rapid pace but hopefully will get the right outcome in the end.

Re: Atherston Matters
Yes they go through everything when you arrive and someone explains to you exactly what will happen (step by step) and gives you your statement to have a good read through. I kept getting offered tea and coffee all day and managed to get out for about 45 minutes at lunchtime (there is a very nice park across the road so went for a sit down there in the sunshine). The court is only a 5-10 minute walk from the station if you are going down by train. The witness service group are affiliated to the citizens advice bureau and were a very friendly bunch who put you at ease - if they have time they will even try and take you down to see the courtroom beforehand. They give you an expenses form to fill out which you take away and post back to them in a pre paid envelope.Holkerbird wrote:I hope everything goes well for you Si. Was there for about 4 hours today before they let us go but with the trip up there and back it was basically the whole day gone. If you are there on your own then I would just advise you bring something to do as you are basically siting in a small room most of the day and there was no phone/internet signal. You could always bring one of your cellar boys down with you to keep you amused

Cellar boys aren't allowed out Si in case they abscond. It will be barrowfan_Chris I think--by car.
