Re: How many Barrow matches have been broadcast live on TV?
I bought a Weymouth top for a tenner to gain access to their snazzy bar that we weren't allowed in. The trick worked although they allowed us all in after the game anyway. This was also the first occasion I met the legend that is Jim Cook #jimcookFACT
Steve Herbert supports the nob theory - Saturday 4th February 2012.
If this bus crashed and everybody on it died, Barrow football would end - Daz Boyle, Boston away, August 9th 2014.

IIRC, the channel was called Screensport, and as John comments, it was short-lived.Steelworks End wrote:Obscure isn't the word! It was s short lived channel broadcast by (I think) British Aerospace, and was only available to pubs and clubs. The Kettering v Barrow match was an evening fixture; I guess that other games also were, although I don't know what other matches were broadcast.Arvo wrote: I’ve been told that a match at Kettering in the early 90s(?) was a live game on some obscure sports channel from back then.

the Weymouth game was definately shown on telly - I was there along with others who entertained the pre match or interval with getting players to kick the ball into the dustbin and actually they also went onto pitch and showed the players how it was done. Also Setanta put money behind the food bar so those up first with their order got their food for free! Weymouth also had a goal disallowed before we scored.

The pub was actually a Kiwi pub, now closed down, called the Southern Cross in Fulham. I organised it with the landlord beforehand since I was living local in nearby Chelsea at the time.Steelworks End wrote:Obscure isn't the word! A group of us exiles watched the game in a pub in Fulham, the Duke of Cumberland as I recall. We had phoned in advance and asked it could be shown, and the landlord agreed. It upset a few of the antipodean regulars who were expecting to watch Aussie Rules football.

As for the game, we were dire, lost 1-0 or 2-0 and only managed one shot - a cowps thunderbolt that hit the bar. No other memories.

We played well too. I watched it alone in a pub in Manchester, then managed to talk a mate into watching it with me. People were giving me some strange looks as I celebrated each goal!Adam29 wrote:Geobarrovian cant of been watching that game too closely as he would of noticed that the home side wore claret and blue and we were firmly in our home colours of white and blue.
And as stu said it was far from a dead rubber as we needed that 3pts massively to avoid the drop
The Alty match 4 years ago, I watched in the Alty bar with my Alty mate, Great turnout too, didn't cheer too loudly however! Great goal by Ruthers on a windy rainy night!
Stood behind Ray Wilkie for years. Best education I ever had.

It was definitely ITV4 that showed the trophy final, got that one burned to DVD, as well as the official DVD.Arvo wrote:2010 FA Trophy Final: Barrow 2, Stevenage 1 (ITV3)
2012-13 Conference: Barrow 0, Hereford 2 (whoever took over from Setanta)
Barrow v Hereford was our last run out on live TV in December 2012 under the Premier Sports banner. As van de nipper points out before that March 2011, Barrow v Altrincham was also shown by Premier Sports.
They only ones I saw live on TV myself were the Burton v Barrow and Weymouth v Barrow games, seen the trophy final game as a recording. Seen others as highlights, except the two premier sports games, seen nothing of either of those.
Don't know how many people watch BT Sports but the audience should at least be bigger than Premier Sports (or even Setanta?) was ever going to be.
On the Weymouth game...It was a damp squib as much as the result to Barrow was important. It looked like a pre-season game at times. Weymouth were heading out of the conference national with financial difficulties that had seen them thumped 9-0 by R&D. They were unable to field a proper team with players refusing to play over non-payment of insurance, among other things. Betting went mad in the run up to that game as everyone knew R&D were going to destroy the cobbled together side they put out. They struggled for the rest of the season to put out a team, replaced the management and slumped to one defeat after another.
Barrow were expected to win it and they did comfortably in the end. However in true Barrow fashion they did make it hard for themselves. I recall at the time Barrow had a growing reputation as a physical side (not always justified). Unlike previous TV showings that had been almost impeccable they did get physical at times in this one, it was not good to watch. A rash of yellow cards and McEvilly got sent off for a dangerous tackle that got him a 2nd yellow, but they played well enough to secure the win. Just into the 2nd half I recall Mark Boyd scoring a belter from outside the box relieving tensions, but don't remember anything about the other 2 goals that followed.

One was a Jones header as someone on here has a picture of him celebrating afterwards as their user avatar.
Popular side since '03.
Re: How many Barrow matches have been broadcast live on TV?
The other was Jones too, an un-Jonah like deft little flick on the volley into the bottom corner. Pretty sure that one was also from a set piece.Matty wrote:One was a Jones header as someone on here has a picture of him celebrating afterwards as their user avatar.

In the early 90's a Barrow home game with Altrincham was due to be a live game on ScreenSport which may have at one time been called Wire Sport ? But the station was either taken over or closed before the match was played and the game was never shown.
The Sunderland FA Cup match was believe it or not shown live around the world. It happens a lot these days. TV companies that have put Outside Broadcast units at the match to show extended highlights later that day, in this particular case it was ITV, allow foreign stations to get across the live feed and show the match in their country, basically a commentator is sat in a studio in say Italy and just commentates off the pictures he sees coming in. I watched the whole game live via an Italian TV station that was also showing a number of other FA Cup matches that afternoon.
One interesting point is this has been happening since the 1970's and a footballing star from that era once told me that there are fans of a certain age who live in Norway /Sweden and support Wolves. The reason is in the 70's they could watch live English games but they were always from the ITV Central feed which of course usually featured Wolves with the commentary from the legendary Hugh Johns.
Scandinavia still take English Championship games live on a Saturday afternoon as well as Premiership games.

Ill never forget getting Middlesbrough in the FA CUP and ITV choosing Wigan Vs Spurs as a live game which ended a 0-0 borefest . The other I think was Man United and Reading.
Not what the FA Cup is supposed to be about at all.

It was Alan Alger from Blue Square Bet who put the money behind the Food Bar. It was appreciated by those at the front of the queue!Angela wrote:the Weymouth game was definately shown on telly - I was there along with others who entertained the pre match or interval with getting players to kick the ball into the dustbin and actually they also went onto pitch and showed the players how it was done.
