Re: Can we achieve the impossible ?
There are major industries in this area. It is up to us to work on them and arouse sufficient interest to come on board. I recall Forest Green a few years ago--before their money man arrived---sporting Asda as their sponsors. We are on the doorstep and as far as I know we didn't get anything from the Barrow branch. It doesn't come without hard work convincing them we are worth backing.mall wrote:"Outside investment and sponsorship". Am not knocking what you're saying, it makes sense, but, any pointers ?.Holkerbird wrote:I think consolidation is the aim for the coming season. We have to have a firm and solid basis in place on which to move forward and upward. Our last promotion came about in unexpected circumstances and we weren't prepared either for the financial or physical (ground) requirements necessary for the league were were entering.
This time round it is a more measured approach which is needed. Alright, there is money available but on a realistic scale--not money thrown at any scheme that is deemed to be a quick fix for a promotion we aren't set up for.
There's ground improvements that need to be carried out which is going to require money and we can't expect PC to fund everything on his own.
The BDF was set up for that purpose, however because of our financial situation it became increasingly used to maintain the running of the club, thus the ground became neglected.
This is why the club has to get the commercial side functioning properly--outside investment and sponsorship is vital. There are ex-league clubs in this league with plenty of experience in attracting much needed funds and these are the clubs we are having to compete against. Travel costs alone are crippling to any club but especially to us northern based , due to our geographical location, this adding to costs we must cover.
Let's hope it is a great season for us with some decent football on display--we need to be entertained.![]()
Sustainability in this league I would think will take a great deal of outside investment and sponsorship and the league above,-even more.
As You are basically saying, we are out on a limb here, do You think this area is capable of making that investment and sponsorship.

Re: Can we achieve the impossible ?
Didn't asda pay for a covenant on the ground many years ago. ( probably ran out now )
The isolation is to our advantage - love it or loath it the evening mail provides so much coverage of the football club compared to what other clubs get
There are plenty of firms in the area that need tapping up
I also believe being in league 2 provides much more finding

Really good topic here. Think we will finish in top half. A good running start is what is needed in order for the momentum to carry on....goes without saying that it spreads thru Club and supporters....dare I say at both ends as well

Sat 8 DOVER ATHLETIC (Home)
Tue 11 Grimsby Town (Away)
Sat 15 Forest Green Rovers (Away)
Tue 18 GUISELEY (Home)
Sat 22 Cheltenham Town (Away)
Where do you see us getting a good running starting?
Dover were 8th last year and played some decent football. Grimsby and Forest Green are title contenders and we have to play both of them away from home.
Guiseley is the biggest chance of 3 points there before he head on our travels again to other title contenders Cheltenham who have come from the league above.

I'd be more than happy with 6 points from them first 5 matches. The Real Slim a former member of this forum wrote:AUGUSTorpheus wrote: A good running start is what is needed in order for the momentum to carry on

Aye, we've got a bloody difficult start of the season. Hopefully the [SwearFilter] brigade can find it in themselves not to panic too much if we aren't 6 points clear by the end of August.

+1. People need to be realistic and not expect too much from a newly promoted side. It will be tough.Lancaster Branch wrote:Aye, we've got a bloody difficult start of the season. Think you're right there Stuey lad. Let's hope they underestimate us too!Van Der Nipper wrote:Difficult start but best time to play them I reckon.
Re: Can we achieve the impossible ?
Agree about tempering expectations, but we had a tough start the last time we were promoted and did ok:
Oxford United h 3-0
Altrincham a 4-3
Cambridge United a 1-2
Mansfield Town h 2-1
York City a 1-1

Harvey Keitel (the guy in a former member of this forum's picture) is Mr Wolf in the film Pulp Fiction. He plays the same character in the Direct Line TV ads. The quote is one of his, although I'm wondering now if that quote may actually be from Reservoir Dogs, in which he also stars.Holkerbird wrote:Haven't a clue what you are on about.xerxes wrote: For some reason the Direct Line ads haven't yet used that particular quote!

Bit of an obscure reference for an advert in 2015 I've always thought. What's next, Tim Robbins sculpting a Jelly Baby out of a piece of alabaster? The Real Slim a former member of this forum wrote:Nah its in Pulp he says that.

I think paul reckons we will make the play offs though i dont agree personally. I am sure, indeed its been alluded to, that we will reinvest in the squad sugnificantly half way through with who we recruit and for how long dependent on where we are.
The idea that we are an impoverished backwater re investment is just a local habit of talking the place down. We look to be building trident, plus tens of billions will be invested all up the coast with the building of moorside and continued work at sellafield. The phrase is irritating but it is ' the energy coast'. Weve got to tap into this in a big way, both with companies and with those new families who will come to the area. The club should be supporting the community through providing opportunities for young people, getting as many young folk through the gate as possible, providing an opportunity for furness folk to be proud of the area they come from. We could offer larger busineses a way of being part of this through sponsorship. Its all interlinked and thats what will grow the club,as will listening to and understanding the people already going to holker st
As for us lot, the current fad seems to be to to airbrush all the great moments from the bayliss years. However the support we gave in those conference years, especially away, was second to none, whatever the result. Teams should hate coming to holker street, and as one of our away fans once said, home teams fans should look across at us and say..' what the f7ck!'becauee theyve never seen backing like it before' not because weve got a few quid but because we are barra soccer.
