Gateshead got stuffed 4-1 by a team supposedly not as good as Grimsby - they'll still finish top half, so no reason why we can't do something similar.
We're not going to get relegated just because we had a shite game so early in the season, just means our weaknesses have become apparent earlier. Edmo will think twice about using those tactics again, where as if we'd have scraped a 0-0 draw he'd have done it for every away match this season thinking it'll work because it's worked before.

Silver linings are that it was a lesson learned in a game we were expected to lose anyway. May even encourage Casson to splash the cash, knowing now that we're clearly not a top 5 side yet.

If the players & management have learnt from this defeat regarding tactics, effort required and nous, then its a good learning curve for everyone. imo. 2 games in is not a disaster and we wont meet the likes of Grimsby every week who are a top top side, and will probably win this league. Now Edmo, the team and the fans know what is required, and hopefully learn from it. always positives from every thing in life. onward and upwards.
Seasons to be cheerful.Part 16 3/4 :skill:

Strangely I'm not to miffed with tonight's thumping, We are adjusting to this league, each other & FT training, We have a very tough opening schedule & even the most optimistic fan didn't think we were going to win tonight.

I am concerned with Edmo's tactics tonight after telling the press that we will go for it, He decided that we weren't.

1, Sending out a 4-5-1 formation which just invites any team to attack you.
2, Not changing it immediately after going 2 down.
3, Changing it too late, On us going 3 down when realistically your already beat.

Hope as others have said, Lesson's have been learnt, Saturday's line up will answer this question.

couldn't make the game as i'm on an early start today, but at times it sounded like we kept possession well prior to the final 3rd. yes we got well beat, but we won't play Grimsby every week and hopefully lessons will be learnt - one of which must be at right back where cowps is trying, but clearly out of position - i'd try Brad Carroll in there next game as he is a right back. Also Elliot Newby's goal shows he's got more composure than Symington, so i'd maybe swap them 2 with Elliott in the team and Symington on the bench. It's interesting to note that BBC's match report had possession at 50-50, corners at 10-10, shots 11-8 (to Grimsby) and shorts on target 7-3 (to Grimsby). most of our chances also came when we went to 2 up top, so maybe 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 would be a better option, and maybe 2 wingers is a luxury we can't afford against the top teams....
Saturday's game at Forest Green is on paper another one of our 3 or 4 hardest away games so lets see if lessons have indeed been learned and see how we do then.

Just got back. Time to elaborate on my earlier post.

From the first minute you could tell we had no interest in going out and getting at them. Playing Cook up front on his own is okay if you have people feeding off his flick-ons, but there was no-one in sight, and I felt for the lad. Symington didn't look interested and Haworth barely touched the ball.
In all honesty, Grimsby were nothing special, they were just well-organised and exploited our weaknesses. Defensive errors were to fault for the goals yet again, and don't get me started on the 4th.
Genuinely looked to me like the players didn't want it tonight, there wasn't the fight there, and Grimsby wanted it more. Very much like a Bayliss performance when we had no money.
On to FGR. Hopefully we got 4-4-2 and start Elliot Newby. Anything like today and it's another drubbing.

The game was awful, it was just the manner in which we capitulated that was the worst. I was waiting for a bit of fight at two nill down, but it never came, we were second to everything, as someone else said we didn't really look interested once they scored.

Grimsby were good, but we made them look bloody brilliant. I'm a really positive person in my outlook, but tonight just seemed like last time we were in this league. If we play like that we will struggle to stay in the league. I know it's early days but tonight really concerned me.

The team got a chasing, worse than the twice before I've seen us there- they weren't world beaters,

Our support was immense. I've come home really proud, as good as anything in the last few years,

Well, just back and how disappointing. Never really expected anything points wise and there is no question Grimsby will be up there at the end but as others have said it's the manner of the defeat which hurts. Supporters never stopped from minute 1 to minute 93 and what do they get in return? A pretty heartless display from most and to top it off they never even had the decency to come down at the end and thank the 115, most of whom have done an 8 hour plus round trip on a Tuesday night, some of whom including me will have to be up again in 5 hours for work, to their faces ! Barely crossed the half way line before going down the tunnel sulking. Our club captain Livesey being the first I might add.

Agree with gazza.
The way they just [SwearFilter] off at the whistle wasn't on.
We all paid good money, time off work to watch them. Out sung 5000 fans for 90 mins and don't even get acknowledged off our players or management.
OK we list but try saying thanks. They get paid for going we don't.

I know hes a bit of a favourite already but Fofana was bullied in the centre of the park today they would just easily shove him out the way, that was off the ball. ARH did alright, the only time we did anything on the ball was actually with the centre midfielders. Wouldn't be surprised to see Lacey come in, but would like to see ARH keep his place. Wake up call not only for Edmo but for Casson.

Changes I would like for Saturday is walker and E.newby in for Fofana and Symington. Great moment for newby, came on and was positive put a good cross in and ended up falling to his feet as he'd moved to the centre of the box and a decent finish from the lad.

Poor on the pitch but not a bad day out, fans were class.

Does anybody seriously think we have at any point been considered a " top 5 side" ?
