Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
Nobody is panicking its just people are rightly [SwearFilter] off at travelling the distance we have to see the team basically forfeit the game the way we did.
Grimsby are a good side dont get me wrong but why not go there and have a go at them? If the chairman/manager realisitically think we are a top 5 side in this league then we shouldnt be going to teams fearing them. Let them fear us by actually competing.
Cook had no support until we bought jase and elliot on and then we actually started to open them up and cause abit of panic for them but by this point we were 4-0 down and the game was dead.

Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
Team selection was wrong as others have said on here.
Edmo has once again gone with a defensive plan very much in the DB style and even though we did make some glaring mistakes to contribute to Grimsby scoring, this contributed more to defeat imo.
Need to select an attacking team and at least try to score some goals. When walker and Newby came on was only time we threatened the Grimsby goal.
Disappointed with some of our so called experienced players performances as well..............

Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
A harsh lesson leant early in the season, plus a reality check for the management team, players & all the supporters who thought this league wasn't as good a standard as the last time we were in it. More importantly a reality check for Mr Casson (hope he was there last night, but probably back in the USA) and his play-off/promotion aspirations. There will be more results like this (Possibly on Saturday), but this should be expected. We presently sit 15th in the early days of this league, if we finish there then I would call it a good first season back in the National league.
Remember, doing a good job that goes unseen is like wetting yourself in a dark suit.

Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
I don't think anyone is panicking at the moment, jesus it's two games on, but like has been said, it is disappointing, basically because of the way we set up defensively and a long journey for those that made it.
Regarding Moribund's comment about PC throwing cash about to get players, that doesn't always work so I would rather he didn't.

But will Edmo realise thisorpheus wrote:OK.come on guys. 2 games gone. No need to panic. 4=5=1 don't work.
Just have a go thats all people want - he talks about being brave them goes there and leaves Cook (who probably has a point to prove at Grimsby) totally isolated.
I had to endure listening to it on the radio - who actually said we played well. Well done to those that went - you did and do the club proud.
If we had gone for it last night and got an early goal those 5,000 fans would have started to get restless and then as it went on would have started to get on their backs - what upset me listening on the radio was when Jason Walker rounded the keeper and then missed the whole stadium were laughing - laughing at us - I'd love us to beat them when they come upto Holker Street but we wont playing negative - we are not good enough at the back for that.

No one is panicking, just disappointed with the performance by all accounts. This is probably where we should be, 15th, 3 points from 2 games isnt bad.
We wont be anywhere near the top 5, we should be consolidating, the aim for me is to survive this season, unless everyone wants us to go and do what everyone has been preaching hate about for years and thats buy our way up the league. Fickle. #FleetwoodAFC

Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
On a pragmatic level, the guys did put in a helluva shift above and beyond the call of duty on Saturday to get a brilliant if slightly fortuitous result. I would expect most of them were carrying a bit of stiffness / fatigue into last night’s game which won't have helped. However, we just weren’t at the races and we had no Plan B although we had a couple of chances later on.
Its early doors of course and we are all finding things out; I didn’t expect any points on the board until Guiseley to be honest. If Grimsby are going to have a successful season they are going to achieve it with minimal vocal support it would seem; do they really just chant ‘Fish’ from time to time or should I have gone to Specsavers who are now doing hearing aids of course and very reasonable they (Cont. Pg.94)

Only people who aren't familiar with the huge difference between the Conference Premier and Conference North/South! As an exile, I only saw Barrow twice last season although I did see plenty of video highlights and they were a long way from being a good Conference Premier team. I'll be very happy to see this team finish above 20th place. The Real Slim a former member of this forum wrote:Moribund wrote:

Does anybody seriously think we have at any point been considered a " top 5 side" ?

Makes you laugh that don't it? Someone from Boston dropped the barbed line 'When you bought the title...' a while back. As if their players play for the love of the town and nothing else? It's basic supply and demand and if you pays monkeys you gets peanuts.Steeley wrote:We wont be anywhere near the top 5, we should be consolidating, the aim for me is to survive this season, unless everyone wants us to go and do what everyone has been preaching hate about for years and thats buy our way up the league. Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
It was just like the last time we were in this league but with more investment so we can expect improvement this time. It's a test of the management- can they cut it at this level..they will learn and make mistakes which is fine. Anyone who expected us to be up there this season is dreaming.
Tell you what, give me tilting at windmills in front of 5000 rather than flaming Harrogate away any day though- it felt good to be back.
Can't wait till Saturday.

Absolutely spot on, well said.Moribund wrote:Gateshead got stuffed 4-1 by a team supposedly not as good as Grimsby - they'll still finish top half, so no reason why we can't do something similar.
We're not going to get relegated just because we had a [SwearFilter] game so early in the season, just means our weaknesses have become apparent earlier. Edmo will think twice about using those tactics again, where as if we'd have scraped a 0-0 draw he'd have done it for every away match this season thinking it'll work because it's worked before.
Silver linings are that it was a lesson learned in a game we were expected to lose anyway. May even encourage Casson to splash the cash, knowing now that we're clearly not a top 5 side yet.

I just worry that two players started last night who at times last season weren't starters in the league below: Cowps and Harvey.

Disappointed of Graythwaite.Got in bed at 0200 and I was first off the bus.Felt sorry for Cook trying to play upfront on his own.It didn't work.Fantastic support as usual and although some of the players clapped us from a distance it would have been nice for the squad to come nearer as a whole and appreciate the fans who have given up their time and money to watch. The thing is now (as Sky Sports would say is BOUNCEBACKABILITY).If tactics were wrong, lets right it at Forest Green. We are playing in the adult league now and we are still at school.School report reads,Must do better.Roll on Saturday.
Re: Grimsby v BARROW match thread
Edmo says we went there with a plan but conceding two early goals meant that plan went out of the window. Thats fine but I hope he realises that the plan was wrong in the first place and that contributed to us conceding two early goals. Cook was extremely isolated up front on his own and left to feed off scraps, so that just meant the ball kept coming back at us time and again and it was only a matter of time before they scored.
I also find it hard to fathom how we had 5 midfielders on the pitch yet Grimsby still had so much space in there. They always had a spare man and looked composed, whereas in contrast we look rushed and panicked on the ball for most of the first half. Maybe it was just their superior quality showing through, I'm not sure.
My main area of concern at present is with the centre backs, particularly Grand. They struggled last night against powerful, quick forwards and didn't win a lot in the air or on the ground. I'd be tempted to bring Steve Williams in on Saturday.
I also think we still lack real quality in centre midfield and not signing Bondy could well come back to bite us on the arse.

I would go out and sign Bondy this afternoon, would be just the man we need alongside Mo.Kieran wrote:Edmo says we went there with a plan but conceding two early goals meant that plan went out of the window.
