Are you sure yes if you are making a statement saying there will be more than one girl but in this case are they are stating it`s for girls therefore an apostrophe isn`t needed!Nigel Bamford wrote:Correct.Ralph wrote: In this case, after the s, as in Girls'.
I stand to be corrected but quietely confident!

If the intention is to indicate possession, i.e. the Performance Centre belongs to the girls, then the apostrophe would be after the s. However, I tend to agree that it is a Performance Centre for girls and therefore an apostrophe is not needed.

No, it is the possessive apostrophe, i.e. it is the Performance Centre for Girls (plural). If it was for one girl it would be Girl's Performance Centre but as it's for more than one girl it should be Girls' Performance Centre. Who'd have thought Edmo mouthing off at Gainsborough would have led to this!blue nige wrote:Are you sure yes if you are making a statement saying there will be more than one girl but in this case are they are stating it`s for girls therefore an apostrophe isn`t needed!Nigel Bamford wrote: Correct.

Edit: but I see others disagree. Ah well. Maybe they're right.

Wouldn't your logic mean it should also be Crooklands Casuals' FC, i.e. the football club for Casuals (plural) from Crooklands?Nigel Bamford wrote:No, it is the possessive apostrophe, i.e. it is the Performance Centre for Girls (plural). We have one of those in Cheltenham. The Street sign says:
St. James' road. How many St. James are there and if there are many, it belongs to the local council, not the Saints? No need for t'apostrophe.

In this case St. James is the singular and ends in an 's' already. Therefore you have 2 options for the possessive, either St. James's or St.James'Fartvs Antiqvvs wrote:

Both forms are acceptable and the apostrophe is required. Sorry for the pedantry.
