Id like to have seen one of the fans that made the journey down have 5 minutes to ask some questions.

I have just watched a team score 5 goals against my team with not one single tackle coming in to prevent any of it.

These players are not showing enough fighting spirit which is not good enough on any level from a Barrow team.

I’ve had a bit of time to reflect now on yesterday’s performance. I agree with most of the comments of Suffolk Blue though I’ll add Ashton to the list of players who came over to the fans to face the music at the end.

In our previous tenure in this league we have been on the receiving end of some hefty scorelines once or twice each season, usually at the hands of Rushden & Diamonds, Mansfield and Luton. However, I’m struggling to recall a game when we so abjectly failed to threaten the opposition goal. A final score of seven- or eight-nil would not have flattered Bromley, they so completely outfoxed us. The match stats on the BBC claim that we had more shots than Bromley (9 versus 8). The statisticians must have been enjoying the guest beers before the game. The stat of zero on target is correct though.

Bromley are a big side who are ready to put a challenge in at the right time. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not a physical side in the ‘dirty’ sense of the term: they had no bookings and we had two. They have a plan and they stick to it. They had also done their homework and knew how to nullify us: get a big defender to stick with Cooky, then outmuscle Haworth and Pilks, pushing them wide or back. You can ignore the middle because nothing ever comes from there. In the first half in particular we had a lot of the possession and we passed the ball around. Bromley were quite happy to let us do that because we were passing it around our back four or just inside our own half and we were never going to do them any damage from there. As soon as we started to encroach into their half then they would press on us and wait for us to lose possession. They then hit us on the break, relaying on a bit of pace from their forward line to leave our defenders gasping in their wake and leaving Dixon completely exposed.

For some reason, despite knowing Bromley’s attacking prowess, we frequently decided to play a high defensive line, looking for offside a metre or two inside our own half. It worked on a couple of occasions but a defence which has not played together very often was never going to get away with it for the whole game. Especially a defence that has little pace and leaving acres of space behind them for Bromley to exploit at will. Once any semblance of defensive discipline, and Steve Williams, disappeared after the third goal it was simply a matter of how many goals we could restrict them to.

When he came on Ant Wilson showed some interest in being involved and Mellor added a bit of bite that had been sadly lacking to that point. It was only when I noticed Symington on the ball that I realised that Haworth had gone off.
At the end of the game, Alex and Harry (aged 12 and 14) who come with me regularly kept asking why we persisted on putting ‘crosses’ into the box when it wasn’t working. Out of the mouths of babes…

That game took us just over a third of the way into the season. I’ve only seen four games, and all of those away games, so I may not be best placed to assess our season so far, but I am concerned. Last season we played what could be called ‘functional’ football. It certainly wasn’t pretty though I was prepared to accept that if it meant that we got out of the Conference North quickly. I thought we could then look to put together a squad with some seasoned pros (like Ashton and Livesey) along with some younger talent (like Dixon and the Newbys). It would allow us to be a little less functional and a bit more adventurous. We’d finish mid-table at first and get well beaten on a couple of occasions but we’d be developing a pool of players that could really challenge in two or three seasons, without splashing huge amounts of cash in an all-out race to the top.

The close season signings looked as though we could be moving in that direction but what concerns me is the seeming lack of progress and direction. I don’t understand why we sign players on two-year contracts who don’t feature in the squad. I don’t understand why we have young, contracted players who don’t get a chance, yet we’ll sign young loanees and short-term trialists who will be given a run of games from the off. My optimism in the longer-term plan is waning because I can’t identify a clear plan at the moment: it looks disjointed and reactive currently.

I’m not a believer in sacking the manager at the first sign of trouble. We’re mid-table and closer to the play-offs than relegation, points-wise. I’ll take that for the moment in our first season back. Though, as many have commented, this league is a lot weaker than when we were last in it. Signs of progress and development plus, perhaps, some entertainment? Hmmmm. That’s where I’m less convinced. I wonder whether Darren Edmondson is trying too hard to keep everyone happy and failing to keep anyone happy. I don’t believe Bromley’s squad is any better than ours and they are part-time. They simply know what they are going to do and they do it well.

It looks to me like all is not well within the squad, either their confidence is super fragile or they just don't want to fight for each other, Edmo and the club. We pretty much didn't put a single tackle in all day yesterday and Bromley waltzed through us with ease whenever they wanted to.

Fair play to those players that came over at the end of course, but I'd much rather see them stand up and show a bit of fight when it matters. First sign of anything going against us at the moment and we just cave in.

Dixon didn't make many saves; eight shots for Bromley might not be far off. Note seven out of the eight on target leading to the five goals.

I was surprised by Barrow's corner count at five, thought it might even have been more. There were two shots that landed on top of the nets so nine shots could be correct but NONE on target. That's really poor.

Apart from the last goal,the rest are shocking,free header for first (cook in front of his man)why didn`t livesey tell him to get tight?,as usual backing off,what are they doing at training?,how many times do we have to see such pathetic attempts at tackling etc,i don`t know where we go from here to be fair to edmo,yes he`s recruited badly ,but the players that were picked should be ashamed of the half hearted lack of passion,committment.

Bingo mentioned that Paul Casson is being let down he`s right these players are on a lot more money than most of our fans and when he comes back to barrow ,i hope he gets them all together and tells them straight that if they don`t want to play for the club then he`ll cancel their contracts not easy i know but these sort of performances are just unacceptable
