This.

I respect everyone's opinion on this, I'm not going to comment any more beyond that.

Civil engineer Corey David Sweet, now 21, of Royal Meadow Drive, Atherstone, said to have no previous convictions but who had been reprimanded for battery on a man who assaulted his brother, was given 32 months in a young offender institution.

Self-employed carpenter Richard Joseph Smith, 24, of Cherry Orchard Estate, Higham-on-the-Hill, who had previous convictions for battery, was sentenced to 32 months imprisonment. He said in interview he was drunk and could not recall the incident.

Builder Ashley Dale Jenkins, 25, of Tudor Crescent, Atherstone, who had been drinking before the match and goaded Barrow fans, was sentenced to 32 months imprisonment. He had no previous convictions. A former retained firefighter, he worked in his father's business.

Former student Lewis Johnson, 22, of Stratton Street, Atherstone, said to have been seeking a career in accountancy after gaining a 2.1 degree in business studies from Manchester University, was sentenced to 32 months imprisonment.

Electrician and former soldier Alex William Turner, 23, of St George's Road, Atherstone, who used to be in the Welsh guards, was given 26 months imprisonment. He went to the match while on army leave and had no previous convictions

Also sentenced to 26 months imprisonment was 23-year-old Kacey Barry Sweet, of Royal Meadow Drive, Atherstone, a joiner said to care for his disabled mother. He had a previous conviction for possessing cocaine and was cautioned for a public order offence.

I wonder if there has ever been so many stiff sentences like this imposed at a non league (albeit FA Cup) match before.

Bang on!
Rare I agree with either Ste or a former member of this forum.... but on this one I'm totally with the harsh sentences.

Assault is not, and should not, be limited to throwing punches. Charging at a stand of innocent football fans, throwing flares at them, intimidating them and making them think their children may be injured or worse... that IS assault, whether you land a punch or not.

If a gang of 50-60 drunken men had targeted a town centre cafe, forcing their way in, throwing smoke cannisters, attacking anyone who was in there, stealing property whilst others bayed them on then I fully expect that there would be some similarly harsh sentences.
As someone who was there on the day with two children I have no sympathy for the plight of the perpetrators. They knew what they were doing and chose to do it. You make your choices and you have to live with the consequences.
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom.....

What has been written by Atherstone Town on their Facebook is a disgrace, and an affront to those Barrow supporters who were attacked by those individuals convicted by the courts. Please consider visiting the club's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/atherstone-tow ... 523661609/and make your opinions known.

I would also call on Barrow AFC to formally approach the Atherstone Town board and make the club aware of their displeasure (assuming they feel the same way as their supporters), and approach the FA for clarification as to whether Atherstone Town have brought the game into disrepute.

About the same numbers involved but far stiffer sentences imposed.
There needs to be a deterrent set when events like this happen.
After all it is a football match were people go to be entertained and enjoy themselves without endangering their health.
Back in the 60's & 70's supporters of both teams stood side by side talking to each other and shouting their teams on.
There was more respect for life in those days.
Society now has lost that respect.
Those yob's (no other word for them) deserve no sympathy, they were not giving those Barrow supporters attending the Atherstone match any.

So here is the latest drivel from their Face Book page

At barcode we support our local lads up in court this week. We personally don't care what the papers or authorities say or try portray. These lads are greatest group we could wish to meet, these lads are not criminals these lads are our friends, neighbours, family and we are proud to be associated with them. They have helped make barcode the friendly peace loving place it is where violence isn't accepted. Id like to invite all our regulars to come have a drink tomorrow night in support of our friends...."
