Good shout. I wouldn't be at all surprised. A player who divided opinion like no other....used to love being the panto villain, but I would rather have had him in my team than on the other side. Scored some important goals, but took some early baths.Shaun wrote:I'd bet Mark Hume was somewhere up there in the 25-30 land.

Re: All time goalscorers list
Quite surprised to see Nick Rogan up there. Surely one of the most frustrating players we've had in recent years.
Re: All time goalscorers list
Found a reference to Andy Whittaker claiming to have scored 37 in a season, how long was he here???

Think Jimmy Capstick put 38 away one season.

Lancaster Branch, no I’m not a statto but I do know a few books that have a lot of stats in them. Nor am I a historian even though I do have a History A-level (though it was more about the 100 Years War than the 100+ Years of Barrow AFC).
Nevertheless, given that my own personal experience of turning up at Holker Street likewise draws ever closer to 100 years (or does it just feel like that?) I was only too happy to check up Barrow’s leading all-time goal-scorers for you. I only have details for our Football League days and the thing that shocked me was that, despite long-since knowing that Billy Gordon was our leading FL scorer, I didn’t realise just how far ahead he was of the second highest scorer. Miles out of sight! Statue for BG?
The following list covers all players who scored 25 goals or more for us and comprises a total of 24 players. The goals are grand totals, covering League, FA Cup, League Cup and “other” (whatever that means). Apologies in advance, Lancaster Branch, for any errors or omissions but at my advanced age my eyes aren’t what they once were I’m afraid.
1. Billy Gordon 168
2. Billy Millar 71
3. James Collins 61
4. Andy McLaren 60
5. Matthew Robinson 57
6. Jimmy Mulholland 55
7. Jackie Robertson 53
8. Jimmy Shankly 51
9. Johnny Kemp 50 (is Johnny still alive and still living on Walney???)
10. Roy McCarthy 46 (also scored a few more in non-league in 72-73)
11. Jim Mulvaney 41
12. George King 40
13. Joe Armstrong 35
14. Alf Burnett and Eddie Miller, both 34
15.
16. George Darwin 32
17. Bobby Tait and Dave Storf, both 30
18.
19. Brian Birch and Eddie Garbett, both 29
20.
21. Tom Harris and Mick Hartland, both 28
22.
23. Tommy Dixon 26
24. Jack Keen 25

Cheers, pjdaly. Some familiar names from the past in that list; Mulholland, McCarthy, and Mulvaney - what a combination!
Re: All time goalscorers list
Good list Pj, and judging by others' posts on this thread, there's a few of the modern ones to slot in there.

I think I'll recall that keeper's instinctive wonder save from Rogan to prevent from us from turning around a 0.3 deficit in that cup match v Bristol Rovers, to my dying day.Moonwatcher wrote:Quite surprised to see Nick Rogan up there. Re: All time goalscorers list
It'd have to have been a cracking instinctive save.......I don't think Rogan knew what he was doing with the ball most of the time so I haven't a clue how a keeper was supposed to know (or Nick's team mates!)Shaun wrote:I think I'll recall that keeper's instinctive wonder save from Rogan to prevent from us from turning around a 0.3 deficit in that cup match v Bristol Rovers, to my dying day.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Re: All time goalscorers list
I've got the MOTD highlights on here which includes this effort, however, they are a .wmv and this is a mac, but if I remember correctly it was when the score was at 3-2 and the keeper made a blinding save to prevent us from equalising
Re: All time goalscorers list
Tony Field - What a player - still my favourite in 38 appearances he scored 16 goals for us - a pretty decent ratio at football league level. Why oh why did he leave us so quickly for Southport? Just to think we had Mulholland, Mulvaney & McAdams around at that time as well. I know younger members can only choose the non league players such as Cowps (who ,I feel, would have performed really well at league level). But for me that late sixties team was Barrow's greatest to date. Hope I see another great Barrow league team in the not too distant futureStu1 wrote:Date: November 19, 1966

TONY Field’s career highlight was undoubtedly playing alongside Pele and Beckenbauer for the fabled New York Cosmos.
But for Barrow AFC fans of a certain age he’s best remembered as the man whose goal clinched promotion to Division Three on the last day of the 1966/67 season.
The former Halifax Town man – who the club initially signed on trial – began his short Holker Street career in the best possible fashion with two debut goals in a 3-1 win at Southend Utd in October 1966.
And a few weeks later AFC fans got to see first-hand what the 5ft 7ins forward was all about when he bagged another brace – as Barrow’s opponents today, Luton Town, were beaten comprehensively, 3-0.
In the words of the Mail’s then Barrow AFC reporter and now club programme editor Bob Herbert, the hosts got off to the best possible start when Field stroked home his first home goal on six minutes after being set up by Mick Hartland and Billy McAdams.
Two minutes later the livewire Field doubled his and his side’s tally in front of the Steelworks end when he capitalised on an error by Hatters keeper Read.
Field was also involved in the decisive third goal on the hour when he was fouled by Luton defender Slough, and Jimmy Mulholland dispatched the resulting penalty.
Field’s goals meant he had bagged five in five for Don McEvoy’s men, and he was to be a regular scorer for the rest of the campaign. He ended his one full season at Barrow with 12 goals in 23 games – including that final-day winner against Brentford, in front of 8,769 fans at Holker Street.
His career took him to Southport the following season before he began an upward curve with moves to Blackburn Rovers and a £75,000 transfer to first division Sheffield United, followed by that dream two-year stint with the star-studded New York Cosmos.
Barrow: Else, Mallon, Edwards, Smith, Arrowsmith, Hartland, Field, Mulholland, McCarthy, McAdams, Pilkington.
Luton: Read, Jardine, Thomson, Slough, Moore, Conroy, Rioch, Ghear, Whittaker, Rivers, Pleat.
Referee: Mr F Nicholson (Manchester).
Attendance: 5,061.

Great topic this though
Re: All time goalscorers list
First time I have seen coverage of this game though the Cotterill incident was well documented at the time, and best forgotten! How unlucky were Barrow that day a couple of penalty shouts and what a reaction save to the Rogan effort not to mention the deflection saved by Phillips from Cotterills strike.geobarrovian wrote:I've got the MOTD highlights on here which includes this effort, however, they are a .wmv and this is a mac, but if I remember correctly it was when the score was at 3-2 and the keeper made a blinding save to prevent us from equalising
