My first ever game at Holker St was against Plymouth, I think, late 60's, when a low hard cross hit the ref on the backside and went in. No one near him. Not sure who claimed that goal.
Been hooked ever since.
It was a George McLean shot at the Steelworks end of the ground that hit the referee Ivan Robinson deflecting it past ex Manchester United goalkeeper Pat Dunne.

Oh that Ivan Robinson...
Thanks for the detail - I still have a picture in my minds eye.

There was a fella who ran the Albion until fairly recently called John Martin (from a well-known family of Martins from Ormsgill mostly I think.) Anyway, he played for us early/mid 70s and I'm pretty sure scored an away hattrick at Morecambe, amongst others....anyone got any full stats on him please?

Re the Ivan Robinson goal v Plymouth, I was sat in the right hand corner of the old wooden stand just behind the Radio Lonsdale broadcast booth at the time.

My memory may have embellished what actually happened, but from my position (which in the event was a pretty good one) I recall three things about the incident i.e.

Firstly the Mclean shot was struck from the right hand side of the (now clubhouse end) penalty area and as I recall the trajectory was taking the ball more towards the popular end corner flag than it was towards the goal.

Secondly poor old Ivan instead of trying to get out the way of the exocet skimming his way actually tried to jump the ball. So he didn't so much deflect the ball as volley it. In fact so well did he strike the ball that some conspiracy theorists claimed he was fulfilling a lifelong dream in a moment of madness.

Thirdly, the stunned silence from both sets of supporters after the ball ripped into the net before confusion broke out about whether what had just happened would stand. Unfortunately the official who had to confirmed that the goal had to stand was the poor sod who'd just crashed the ball into the net. I'm not sure Ivan ever recovered.

If we'd have had Footballs Most Embarrassing Moment available at the time, it would still be being shown today. Thankfully for poor Ivan Robinson he managed to live the rest of his life without a continual reminder of his most famous moment.

This was the excerpt I sent to The Guardian years ago:

"...managed to bring to our attention this letter from a fan in attendance that day, an A J Wilkins, published in a Barrow AFC internet newsletter - 'Holker St News' - in 1998: "Plymouth weren't expecting any supporters and so hadn't claimed any complimentary tickets. When two of us appeared at the players' entrance, [Plymouth] manager Billy Bingham asked referee Ivan Robinson for his two tickets and he duly obliged. In the 77th minute, with the score at 0-0, George McLean fired a mis-hit [sic] across the Plymouth goal and Irish Republic goalkeeper Pat Dunne came out for a routine collection. The referee tried to jump out of the way, but the result was a perfect back-heel into the unguarded net. The final score: 1-0. Waiting for the tram home, I got talking to a man with a large black bag. 'At the match, were you? Then you know about the goal?' I said. 'Know it? I scored it,' was the stunning reply."
"Walter, I'm sure there's a reason you brought your dirty undies..."

Yes it may have been a back heel now you mention it. The ref certainly wasn't on the goal line though and was several yards out.

Thing about it was it looked premeditated if not a little nonchalant which made it all the more remarkable.

Re meeting Ivan after the game - if true that's totally epic!

My memory, from my position behind the goal, is the same as mentioned by Shaun, in that Ivan back-heeled it into the net whilst attempting to jump out of the way. And of the meek, embarrassed look on his face as he gave the goal, surrounded by protesting Plymouth players. It did, however cement Ivan's place in Barrow AFC folklore.

By coincidence, Ivan Robinson was also in charge of Barrow's next match, away to Goole in the FA Cup. Quite what the home supporters thought of the official's impartiality is not known, in face of the chants of "Ivan, Ivan, give us a goal" every time the ball went near to him!

Johnny Martin was a very talented player. Legend (or urban myth) had it that he went to Blackpool with his workmate Emlyn Hughes. They played for their third or fourth team in front of one man and a dog for several months without making much progress. Johnny got fed up and returned to local football and eventually HS.Emlyn wanted to but 'Ginger' his forceful dad made him stick it out and the rest is history. As I've said thats how I was told it many years ago. Make of it what you will.

James Bell (1911-1917) - 146 appearances - 78 goals
Jim Collins (1947-1955) - 295 appearances - 53 goals
Andy McLaren (1951-1954) - 155 appearances - 52 goals
Jimmy Mulholland (1965-1969) - 134 appearances - 47 goals
Jackie Robertson (1958-1962) - 156 appearances - 47 goals
Barry Diamond (1977-1980 + 1982-1984) - 109 appearances - 43 goals
George King (1950-1952) - 86 appearances - 35 goals

And my favourite (for the name):

Fred Ferrari (1928-1929) - 26 appearances - 14 goals

At Barrow, Ferrari had the most prolific season of his career with a total of 14 goals in 26 league appearances. On 23 February 1929, he scored a hat-trick in a league match against Nelson and the Nelson directors soon pursued him. In June that year, Ferrari signed for Nelson for a fee of £85 and went straight into the first-team, making his debut on 31 August 1929 in the 2–2 draw with Southport.
So we've had Ferrari, McLaren and Ford playing for us[/Clarkson]

So far in the AFC story Cowps is the stand out goalscorer and character, I seem to remember when he packed in there was talk of doing a Cowps statue but the committee appointed to look into it found that the price of the bronze made it unfeasible. They had enough to an Andy Whittaker statue but obviously he just didn’t have the legendary status that Cowps had. Anyway with money no problem these days and a stadium redevelopment just around the corner – who knows.

Ah, WG, I think you are being TIC here and looking for a response. Well okay, we all know why they could afford the bronze for an Andy Whittaker statue . . . . . it’s because he was exceedingly thin. Any further comment on this matter should not be pursued as it might be deemed impolite.

I don’t really disagree at all with what you are saying because in a just world Cowps should indeed be moulded for all the appearances and goals he provided. However, I personally go for Brian Arrowsmith as my first choice, though I would prefer it to be a new stand named after him even more so than a statue. I know this thread is about goal-scorers and they are the ones who usually attract more glory and attention but despite scoring I think only three goals in his decades with us Brian represents the all-time Barrow number one icon in my book, having skippered us to our highest ever Football League finishes.

On a serious note, I do hope something can be done to give recognition to Brian before it is too late; the guy will be mid-seventies now and let us hope he has many more years left but it is a fact that he is not getting any younger. Let’s not leave it till after this great man has gone.

Agree about Arrer but always thought that a Cowps statue in the flower bed at the corner of Station Approach would be good.

Ideally he would be nudging a defender out of the way, ready to head the cross Emlyn is about to provide from across the road.

Unfortunately success with occasional National Lottery tickets to provide the funds continues to elude me.

I remember a good while back it had been in the Evening Mail that the council were asking for suggestions to name newly built streets on a new Holbeck development site.

A wag from Give 'Em Beans! offered up 'Colin Cowperthwaite's 25-Yard Drive' which has not however featured on the borough council's plans to date.
