Yeah but it's not worth the risk. If you've got players of a lower standard they are more likely to miss time a challenge. What's the point in building a good squad if you're going to lose a player immediately?
Could say that about any pre season game though. Any actual teams we play might contain trialists keen to impress so going harder into tackles, or stronger players liable to give ours knocks.

Disrespectful to both the fans and the Furness select lads. Not played at Holker St anymore, not containing any Barrow AFC players, what a pointless fixture.
Maybe time to drop it completely then? But this seems like a better compromise, and will still raise funds etc.

I understand that strong tackles can happen at any level at any time and a player could be injured on the first proper game of the season, it's just the risk increases as skill decreases. Not trying to be disrespectful to anyone but can see why the decision has been made. Remember the awful injury at the Kendal friendly a few years back?

You are one of the lads.....just better looking than the other ones.

Ok, ok, ladies as well :)

Maybe we should just pull out of Football altogether.

We don't want to risk anyone being tackled.

Seems a good move.

Chance for non-coffee types to meet the squad around the ground and for the manager to look at possibles in a competitive match.

Presumably this means all/most of the manager's close season targets have been signed by him/other clubs and he is now casting his net wider?

I like this fixture played away from Holker St as it provides revenue to the hosting local club via entrance fee and over the bar takings.
The only hitch in this arrangement I can see is the fact it isn't being played at different local club grounds thus giving all a fair chance of hosting. It is a Furness Select not a Holker Old Boys fixture so perhaps the venue could be held at other clubs on a rota system.
Fair do's all round to those whose players are selected and turn up for the traditional fixture.

It used to be played at Furness Cavs, has it ever been elsewhere? Dalton would be a good venue right off the station plenty of pubs to takeover.

Begs the question, is there actually any point of having this fixture? It worked alright under previous management, but if Cox is just going to treat it as a trialist match, may as well have it at the training ground in Manchester.

+1

For all the warm words, players in the crowd etc in the paper this isn't respectful of this fixture, which is to support the local football, an area where we have a patchy reputation (and that's being kind).

However, it is a chance to have a few bevvies, give Holker a couple of quid, meet mates and ease into the season. So will go.

Why can't this fixture be at Holker St with it being part of a series of events on the Day? Include a meet and greet, family fun day with stalls, face painting, beer tent etc during the day and a few local bands evening/nighttime. Great PR and a good day for all. Charge a fiver for adults, free for kids and it pays for itself.

The day always ushers in the start of preseason football, always been about the occasion and never the football for me! Sadly can't make it this year, go and enjoy it for what it is we are Barrow not Barca. We will get to see the new players soon enough.
Agree it should be shared amongst other clubs in the area though as Holker Street undergoes its summer rest and recuperation.

I'd be pretty disappointed if this opening pre-season fixture was 1/ ever scrapped or 2/ played at Holker St.

I'd agree with Elaine and others though, it should be shared amongst some other clubs around the area....as much as I like it at HoBs - it'd be the fair and right thing to do.

Agree with you ian (there's a first! )it's just about getting a look at some other players and giving Holker some money nothing too serious!

You can look at new players whilst using the players you have though.
The locals want to test themselves against the current barrow afc team to try and impress and show their credentials. Not a load of triallists. As ab said above if we are not going to use our first team players in this game then we might as well just play a behind closed doors game at our training Base in Rochdale.
