I thought it was quite a depressing performance. Too much brute force long ball in the hope of getting knock-downs but invariably the Torquay big guys swept up well. I've now seen all three games and it was Byron Harrison's worse. He didn't look interested. Hannah didn't either come to that. True he was feeding off scraps but I felt his contribution could've been better. Turnbull worries me and I haven't been impressed with Hughes but thought he'd do better when tucking in after Turnbull's departure but unfortunately he didn't.

Meikle and Bennett (and to a lesser degree Howarth) provided impetus when they came on, and the last 20 minutes were almost all Barrow yet we didn't make too many chances. Thankfully a lucky deflection gained us a point but it was so dispiriting.

The away fans (obv me included) were in-line with Bennett's shot. It would've gone well wide. Nice bit of luck and it was great to see Bennett so hyped up and ecstatic in his celebrations. He looks committed and can't deny I like the guy.

The three subs made a significant difference and the deflection was the piece of luck that we needed to squeeze a point from a poor game. Agree re. Harrison, not yet at the races which is disappointing.

I was intrigued by saltcellar' comments on Andy Parry so I checked on some stats and they are amazing. He played in the last 18 games of the season the % wins went up from 32.1 to 44.4 . The % draws went up from 21.4 to 44.4. The % defeats went down from 46.4 to 11.1. Average goals scored went up from 1.28 per game to 1.55 per game. Average goals conceded went down from from 1.89 per game to 1 . Clean sheets went up from 18% to 40%. I was at the tranmere game and we badly needed a quality holding midfielder to settle the side down just a thought !

Those stats don't really prove that Parry should be in the team - maybe it was Jordan Williams that was responsible? Maybe it was because the team clicked around that time and Parry just happened to be there?
I will agree though - if we're going to play defensive football away from home, take out a forward and stick Parry in. No point in having two strikers isolated upfront doing nothing for 90 mins.

I saw quite a few matches that Parry played last year, and my personal view is that he's a very clever footballer. He doesn't do a lot on the ball in a constructive way, but sitting just in front of the defence he makes it difficult for the opposition to play, running into excellent defensive areas.
If I'm right I'm surprised Cox hasn't used him yet, particularly against Tranmere where we were on the defensive from the word go.
A 4-5-1 set up perhaps?

Last season Parry simply added some needed protection in front of a back four that were pretty familiar with each other and were playing okay most of the time, in particular the centre back pair of Livsey and Grand. This season that back four has been changed around and yesterday Anderton was the only one left from last seasons line up. It might help if Parry was back in there but the current back line are practically strangers despite pre-season.

In fact the whole team are strangers. The team needs time, pre-season together will have helped but a handful of friendlies is no where near enough time with the number of new faces in this team. The core of last seasons team is gone, we still have bits of it but this is really a new team and I expect it will be some time before they are firing on all cylinders.

TBH they should already be settled in after all the friendlies and am a little disappointed in Cox as we are still short of players and he doesn't seem know how to set the side up properly to get the best balance as the Tranmere and Torquay games have proved.

Quite interesting listening to Souness on Sky today talking about Utds players taking 5 or 6 games to gel and understand the way the Special one wants to play.

If it will take that long for them to sort it I think we may need a little patience as well.

To be fair Cox has said all summer that he expects to start slow and won't see the best of us till after Christmas. Few more signings needed though

It's ok saying that (and maybe it covers his butt for a short while) but if most of the others hit the ground running then we'll be left playing catchup. I really don't like that statement. That only works if we are picking up points whilst playing badly. I think we are 2 or 3 decent lads short yet.
