Last night was not surprising on any count . . . of course the attendance was low because of course there were about 3000+ there on Saturday who only appear when a circus comes to town. I personally know for instance of two who were there on Saturday who had not been at Holker Street in decades and who chose to travel to watch Man Utd vs Hull last night. It's entirely unsurprising because people are fickle and jump on bandwagons. It didn't help that we made so little impression on Saturday (even though the discerning emphasis should have been on just how good Rochdale were rather than how ineffectual Barrow were). I am just surprised that anyone is surprised at last night's attendance.
As for the performance, me and a pal both feared the worst before kick-off; aside from the "after the Lord Mayor's show" factor, the players have recently looked mentally jaded . . . before and now after the Rochdale circus.
Cox has shown that he is very good at working on the psychological side because he got this same bunch playing as a team that were arguably punching above their weight and amounting to more than the sum of their parts during the long unbeaten run; now he has to prove he can do something on the psychological front for a second time, perhaps by doing something very imaginative and very different away from the field during training hours?
The talk is of finding four or five new players but if we could find even just one player in January to raise the entire morale of the team that could be enough . . . an inspiring and experienced midfield general to completely reverse the current downbeat psyche of the team. But we've been crying out for this for years now, long before Paul Cox arrived, and Mr Cox, successful though he has been, has yet to prove that he can coach a team to play through the midfield so I don't expect that will happen. But we live in hope . . . it's what Barrow fans do and have done throughout most of their history . . . we continue wishing on stars, find a blue moon once in a while or give up and journey far to find the sunshine of Old Trafford etc. Give me the rain, the snow, the howling gales and Matlock on Saturday because, to quote, "we're all Barrow, ain't we?" Well, about a thousand of us are.
