A good lad is Mark! I had the 'pleasure' of playing against him in Secondary School Football and Rugby fixtures. I once witnessed him being sent off for aggressive behaviour (this was during a Rugby match!). He bounded over to the ref (our school sports coach) I honestly thought he was going to give him a slap! I also traveled with him on the coach to away games (Barrow Boys Rugby Teams). Some of his exploits are legendary!

However, I agree with your assessment of his abilities. You've missed one of his 'qualities' out, however. He was a very passionate player who gave 100% for the shirt and his town. If we had another 6/7 players with his kind of 'committment'...
ie the Ray Wilkie team...we'd stroll through this league!

I'm going to say something controversial now. There were a handful of matches in the early part of last season when I genuinely thought that Moussa was the worst player I'd ever seen wear the shirt. Terrible positional sense, couldn't pass, couldn't tackle, the ball seemed to ricochet off every part of his body except his boot in random directions, and he couldn't even head the damn thing. I may have made some quite caustic remarks about him on this very forum. Half a dozen games later, and he had somehow morphed into outstanding, and made a complete mug of me.

Lot of sympathy with that, Moonwatcher. I remember seeing him early on in the season for the first time (away at Tranmere) and thinking and then articulating 'I know he has come from a few leagues down but...' and then rolled into some well known Anglo Saxon phrases. I was very happy that he proved himself to be such an asset, albeit more with his head than perhaps his feet. With luck, he will get some rest at some points during this coming season too, he did play too many games last term.

Actually Bennett was very much the same when he first joined.

Remember going to Stalybridge for the last PSF last season. Moussa looked like bambi on ice, no Harrison, Bennett looking two yards short of pace and clueless and Hannah sent off five minutes after coming on as sub. Vegas won 2-0 and beat us at a canter instantly managing expectations.

Soon after we went on a 20 odd game unbeaten run and Vegas headed for the CN trap door. Funny old game.

Going back to the Richard Dinnis era in 1992..an amazing 25 years ago...I remember he brought in two supposed major signings at the start of the season in Colin Methven and Barry Butler. Barry Butler turned out to be a very good combative midfielder similar to Steve Gaughan (remember him) however Colin Methven..a centre half..must have been pushing 40 and looked absolutely wasted. He had a terrible few games for us and I think it ended up with a square off between the then board refusing to continue to pay his high wages and Dinnis pleading for more time saying he would come good on the heavier grounds. It became a resigning issue I think and Dinnis duly went along with Methven who I think had a further one game trial for Accrington before being dispatched to the graveyard where he belonged. So for me Colin Methven has to be the worst. Perhaps i should finally add that he had apparently been a semi decent player for Wigan many years earlier.
