No longer, yes and yes.

You may also presume I have travelled somewhat and tend not to be shrouded in negativity.
Your reply is slightly off the point I was trying to make which is: Barrow is probably the most isolated place on earth.

You replied with: 'If you seriously believe that you should try getting out more'
Followed by your comment above.

Both your replies aren't relevant to the point I was trying to make.

It's common knowledge that Barrow is known as the longest cul-de-sac in the world due to its isolated location.
Oh dear. A few days away from the forum and yet more nonsense!

You asked three questions which may or may not have been relevant; I answered them in the simplest manner as possible - yet you say my answers aren't relevant!

It isn't common knowledge that Barrow is known as ("at the end of") the longest cul-de-sac in the world due to its isolated location. A throw-away line by musician/comedian Mike Harding nearly thirty tears ago was likely the origin of the cul-de-sac remark and people without many original thoughts of their own have parroted it over the years. Such a line is what comedians do to warm up an audience at the start of their set - have a laugh at and with the locals. Jason Manford did the same at his show at The Forum last night.

It is, for example, no more isolated than the current Capital of Culture, Aberdeen or Plymouth. Forty-plus percent of the settlements in this county are, by any standards, more isolated (try drawing a line from Broughton to Penrith and look north-west); another twenty per cent arguably so, depending upon what you mean isolated from.

Some Barrow residents simply fail to recognise the positives in their own town and area. Is it perfect? Far from it. Are there significant challenges? Of course. Neither is a reason to roll over and be ridiculously pessimistic about the area's lot, allowing power, money and decisions to continuously drift towards Carlisle, where most people have never been to Furness. It would be a terrible thing if local government was reorganised again (it surely will be) and for a single unitary for the present county's boundaries chosen as a result.

Anyway, this is all wildly off-topic so thanks for indulging me and I'll leave the last word in this thread to TTK who will surely have another comeback!

That's a good post that, long standing perceptions such as the cul-de-sac reputation has seemed to have lasted for years and years despite not really being based on any real factual evidence.
