Perhaps half a dozen training sessions at Holker Street over the season. It's more than the training it's using the opportunity to strengthen the team links in the town. Chance for kids to meet the players, A mixed training session with the senior youth sides, a school / college visit, Radio Lonsdale visit./ player interviews. A Presence in the town was one of the things Paul Casson spoke about as one of his key aims. Bringing the club back into the town.

Love the way the club uses it's little network to spin everything.
All of a sudden were being fed a line that Cox might have done something dodgy, that straker was let go for not spotting it.
Give it a fortnight no doubt some dirt on Ogden will "leak". One director in particular is well known for having loose lips when oiled up.
It's becoming apparent that Paul Casson hasn't a clue what he's doing. I'd go as far as questioning his business credentials because the mark or a good leader is acknowledging when you've made mistakes and not repeating them.
He needs to drop this daft idea of Director of Football or what have you and bring in a proper, experienced CEO to run things rather than giving the job to his mates/sons/ whoever's turn it is this week.
I want my club to be successful, but at the moment we are becoming a joke. Too many false promises and all we have to see for nearly 2 million quid of debt is some bloody awful floodlights and a bar with fancy wallpaper. We are no better run now than pre takeover, I'd even go as far as saying the Managment is worse now because at least before they were amateurs.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
Indeed. The fact is that you wouldn't get a team of professionals who would do it unless they were paid a bucket load of money. They are footballers with families and not many of them would be wanting to spend a night in Barrow unless they were paid very, very well for doing it. Just driving to Barrow once a fortnight from Manchester as well as other trips every other week will be one reason why we probably are paying too much for average players and why we don't have a great choice. If people want a team of locals it's already there and called Holker. They play at the highest level a local player can get to and if they were renamed Barrow and could pull in a few more of the better local players they might be challenging for their league instead of struggling near the bottom and there might be enough interest to attract 100 or so supports for home matches.
Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
Well put. They are our only true local side.
We are out on a limb geographically but always have been. We were in the league for many years with a mix of local and imported players and managers.
I don't feel we have the right connection with the players and manager?
I think if we interviewed most of our staff they would have scant knowledge and motivation for our club.
They are claiming a decent living for let's be honest hardly a pressured job is it?
Barrow AFC is a north west club. Let's have more local connection and someone who can lead us out of the current situation please. I raise as an item of discussion.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
I think the current bunch of players DO make an effort with fans, dave neiskins for one who off his own backside, pops in to crossbar and pretty much thanks everyone for their support... some others do so to and is great to see! Some of the others do it too and its a start. Dave said without us, he doesn't have a job doing what hw loves to do.. thats not a selfish or uncaring attitude at all! If you take the time to talk to the players instead of "assumption" you can hear first hand that they do actually give a damm about the club! Would love to see morw local lads but until they have then right attitude, desire and commitment I would rather have a group of players who want to fight fornthe club... local kids get to an age where drink, girls, cars take over.. it's a sad fact and until mentality os changed, its not gonna go away unfortunately
Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
Why the hell are people obsessed over where the players come from? Like it matters what town is on a birth certificate (talking more than just about football there...)
Are you saying you can only be passionate about Barrow if you're from this side of the M6? Where's the cut-off point?
Dave Nieskens isn't from Barrow, and he's infinitely more passionate about the club than a certain ginger striker was. Jimmy Dunne and Ryan Yates both signed up on six month contracts, and have shown more spirit and enthusiasm than 95% of the players we've had in a long time.
Are people really that bothered about signing a local lad so that he can do school visits? Is that what this whole debate is about? It sounds like people just want local lads in the team for the sake of it, because that's what it was like in the good old days.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
We've had this debate a million times.
Locals haven't been good enough. Many blame the club (with some justification) for not treating them right in the ressies and suchlike over the years, usually after they came out of a the churn of an academy system, which now allows satellite centres in places like Ulverston, where local coaches are paid to punt them in Carlisle's direction. Too many are bitter about it all and knock the club at every opportunity.
The jealously guarded (and ridiculously poached...a junior football manager was trying to tap one of my 9 year olds up to get him to move to the 'best team' at a schools game this week) junior football teams start to struggle when they play teams from bigger areas. It would be nice if player development was valued over winning.
I am a fan of the Performance Centre as it attempts to bridge these gaps in a variety of ways but under the present system what happens to kids who can't afford to pay the subs, or home life is too chaotic to be picked up, dropped off etc?
Who from Barrow has really 'made it' since Neil Doc or Kenny Lowe?
So until improvements in that come to fruition (and people are trying hard to make that happen) banging on about locals with a connection to the town is pointless IMHO.

Kenny Lowe wasn't from Barrow.barrowaberdeen wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2017 7:58 am Who from Barrow has really 'made it' since Neil Doc or Kenny Lowe?
There are plenty of young players at the moment well placed within football league academies. Theres a young lad at the moment representing England at the u17 world cup. Hes on the books at Man City.
The club has a very basic youth set up. Basic at best. Its not too different to what I used to play in back in the early 2000's. Like you mention above its Carlisle who are dominant in this area holding trials down Glaxo with many coaches of junior teams putting their brightest and best players out on the shelf. Blackpool raid the town for a lot of players also.
If Barrow had a really decent youngster in say the under 13's. He wouldn't be at Barrow for long, he would be snapped up by the likes of Carlisle, Blackpool, Bolton etc. Thats why we havn't seen any young eager local players since the Turnbull/Wilson era, Morsby, Liddcott, Rushton, Swarbrick etc. In more modern times there seems to be a prerequisite for any local players to have been at a football league club before they can play for Barrow.
Still mad to think there were times when the club would travel with 4 on the bench and with no sub keeper.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
Whether they would change the name or not is irrelevent. I'm merely saying if anybody wants to watch the best locals they can go and watch Holker as they are playing at the higest level of a local team in Barrow and about the level Barrow would be if they played local players only. There's no rivalry between any local team and Barrow as they are miles apart in terms of level. In fact, in my day, Vickers were the dominant local team with Holker behind them and the best North Western teams sunch as British Legion, who I played for, Askam, Swarthmoor, Millom, Ulkverston Rangers and Glaxo slightly below the top 2. The only rivalry in local teams is between themselves not with Barrow.mall wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2017 11:23 amHolker would never ever change their name to Barrow.Anyone that thinks that must live in cloud cuckoo land.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2017 11:03 pm Indeed. I agree with a lot of what you say in terms of the level, standard etc. But as far as "2. Would be too big a financial step to put in an academy probably. What we have got at the Performance Centre goes some way to addressing that but as you say anyone is snapped up by the clubs you mention. All those players you mention were decent but never made to to the FL. The clubs have no loyalty to BAFC and why should they? As for Holker, a few of us used to go up there once in a while but no longer due to the attitude up there regarding Barrow. Things cut both ways.
I'm not sure where the club goes with it. It was was great to see them making the Perfomance Centre kids a part of things and the investment in that is miles better than before. The Trust helps contribute as well and that's a good use of money all can agree on. Maybe the club should actually ask the local clubs what they want. If we released the ground a wee bit more for finals, played the friendly at Holker, used the ground for coaching courses and supported them for reffing and the like through the community? Some free tickets for a midday kick off once in a while? I don't know.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
How on earth could any local team help Barrow when they are miles behind the level of Barrow? They can't provide players who are good enough and they can't provide any finance. I'm going back a long way but I never heard one player who would ever talk about Barrow as a rival club. Our rivals at British Legion were the clubs I mentioned and from those our fiercest rivals were the club we thought was most likely to try and kick us off the pitch which was Swarthmoor.mall wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2017 12:19 pmI agree with a lot of what you say in terms of the level, standard etc. But as far as "2.
