Many of the players stop over in barrow Friday nights before Home matches - can’t be cheap so why not get them here earlier to do community things
everyone is entitled to their opinion, deal with it

I presume that community work and meeting the general public isn't written into their contracts, therefore the club couldn't force them to do it, even if it had the inclination or foresight

No back in the day Swarthmoor played sublime football. Colin Morrison would never kick anyone.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2017 12:37 pmHow on earth could any local team help Barrow when they are miles behind the level of Barrow? I agree with a lot of what you say in terms of the level, standard etc. But as far as "2. The only rivalry in local teams is between themselves not with Barrow", Thats absolute bollox.
If there is no rivalry why the hell didn't they get together years ago to help each other out,it could have worked very well for both clubs.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
You must be joking. Colin was a very good player but was well known by opposing players for kicking people and I can tell you for a fact that all the British Legion lads (who bar having one similar player to Colin) were a pure football team thought of Swarthmoor as a long ball teaml. We rated the Askam United team with the Ellershaw brothers as a much better team for pure football. As I actually played for Swarthmoor for one season when we won the North Western League I knew the Swarthmoor lads very well and overall they weren't as good as the British Legion players but were definitely physically stronger.DIXIE wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2017 8:18 pmNo back in the day Swarthmoor played sublime football. Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
At the time I played our "enforcer" was one of my 2 best friends (together with Dave Martin) who was Peter McDonald, the elder brother of Ian and Neil McDonald who both playerd for Barrow and a very good player in his own right. Pete was not happy if he went through a game without kicking somebody but he was very sneaky and didn't get caught as much as he should have done. Dave and myself, particularly Dave who was a stickler for fair play, were always getting on to him about it but he just used to enjoy doing it whatever we said. Re the Swarthmoor lads, it's amazing how your perception of players changes when you play with them.Probably because we were such great rivals and always thought they were inferior to us in terms of pure football we had this image of some of them as being downright thugs but when I got to know them in the year I played for them they were as nice a bunch of lads as I've played football with anywhere.mall wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2017 11:18 am(who bar having one similar player to Colin)-russell_anderson wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:28 am You must be joking. I used to work with Gerry Maguire and he often used to tell us tales about his exploits with the great British Legion team of that era.
I think I remember him mentioning Peter McDonald but can't be sure !.

Re: Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
I was joking about Colin. I remember Swarthmoor were physical, but the legion could dish it out as well. You are right Askam were a decent side as well. Bootle also decent or was that a little later.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:28 amYou must be joking. Bootle slipped my mind (a lot of things do nowadays!) but you're absolutely correct as they had a spell when they were a very good side as well.DIXIE wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:03 pmI was joking about Colin. Because of the physicality (real or imagined) of the 1960s Swarthmoor team obviously.
We will foller the soccer, over land and sea...
