I've always found at any ground in the country and at any level the away fans always make a lot more noise - they're all stood in the same place compared to being spread out around the ground when at home and more likely to have spent a few hours on the drink before the game, rather than going straight from home, to name a couple of reasons. I've been to Old Trafford (with 72,000 home fans) a few times and found the same.

How many times do we say on the away match threads that our fans sound in good voice? Countless.

Aye.. Times I've looked forward to the "big games" or "bigger games" thinking a belting noise would be heard only for it to be like a damp Squibb..
I personally love two sets of supporters trying to out sing, chant etc for 90mins egging their team on..
Wasn't privvy to our football league days but I'm pretty sure the noise and atmosphere at hs would have been something else.. Maybe one day soon eh?

I was unfortunately at the league games and it's more or less just like now I still think people's judgement gets clouded when they think of the roof being a difference because it all depends on a factor of things.
I think at the moment everyone is too tense to enjoy making a noise!

I have to disagree with you regarding your first comment. However, I agree - to a point - with your second.

I've made many comments regarding the atmosphere on The Holker End during our football league days, so I won't go into details again. It was TOPS and I haven't heard anything like it since those days - but those days have gone. And so has the roof. I won't negate the advantage the roof gave with regard to the volume of the chanting but there's one factor forum members always forget to mention when this topic re-surfaces: The football being played. Or to be more precise: the type of football.

Your second comment hints at this. However; I don't think fans are too tense; I just think they're bored s**tless watching the football we play!

In our football league days (I'm talking about the Div 3 side) we had a team who played outstanding football - they were, by far, our best side ever. That side made you WANT to sing and chant! They also played with passion, pride and commitment. The fans responded to this with the best vocal support I've ever heard at home.

Unfortunately; I haven't seen a team since (including last season) who instilled such passion and pride in our fans. Ray Wilkie's side came close but the numbers weren't the same on the terraces so the vocal backing wasn't so strong.

Of course, Holker Street is a morgue - because the football being played (and it's been going on for too long) has been dire! Including last season. It doesn't make you WANT to chant or sing. There's nothing to get excited about.
If we had a team that played attacking, entertaining football - the attendance figures would increase.
If we had a team that also played with fire and passion and fought for every ball so would the vocal support!

No use blaming the demise of the Ultras or the lack of a HS roof.

Play some football that will inspire the fans. Play some football which will generate passion and excitement in the ground. And the vocal support WILL re-surface. Rest assured!

Looking back at the Football League days, perhaps there is a tendency that like your childhood, you only remember the good days. I watched a lot of football in the 60s and 70s, Barrow and Man Utd mainly and first division teams on TV. It seems like every team bombed forward in a high tempo manner with wingers in the thick of it, forwards banging the goals in mixed with blood and thunder tackling and spectacular saves by the goalkeepers. I think the emphasis was on entertainment and pulling in the punters – for the clubs’ home games at least.

By contrast, a degree of control and composure was demonstrated by the National team who passed the ball about sideways a lot, kept possession and didn’t bomb forward relentlessly. I always thought international games to be rather dull and lacking in excitement compared to club football of the time. Generally, this controlled and composed manner of playing is the preferred way nowadays for all with variying degrees of success and creates a more subdued spectator experience.

Home is weird. Being one of the 5/6 younger lads that go away it's great times. However there isn't enough. Many teams Chester,Halifax,Maidstone have a good core of young / older lads making great atmosphere home and away sadly we can't seem to strike this cord. Will be a shame in a few years time if more don't come along and join. As people aren't going to be going for ever.

With recent improvements on the pitch and fantastic results to boot... I hope that people stand take note and maybe start to trickle back?
Getting back into the football league will benefit both atmosphere and gate increases, I think locals feel a bit stuck in a rut in this league.. even though the quality of opposition has improved

Playing the likes of Carlisle or Morecambe again would be awesome and maybe ignite that need for people to be a tad louder???

I think one or two will come trickling back but not that many. Moneys drying up everywhere. Morecambe's gate is a good example. Carlisles gates are down as well.
