FESTIVE BAFC MEMORIES
Wondered if anyone has any decent ones as most of last few years appear to have involved Fylde or getting pumped at Gateshead,
I suppose one that sticks in the head from recent times is Workington Away. Two terrible teams, dozens of Police, marching through Wukkington singing 'Who will rob your houses?" and a winning goal from their former hero. Wasn't a big support, we took about 140-50. Evening Mail Headline was Joy to the World!
Aside from that I remember a festive hammering of and a pumping from Lancaster at Giant Axe, interesting stewarding and Norwegians at Stockport and destroying trainers at Fylde,
I'm sure folk can do much better...Morecambe at least!

Boxing Day 1962. Barrow 4 Darlington 1. A few snowflakes began to blow around in the second half necessitating the introduction of an orange ball. As we left the ground we weren't to know that it was the beginning of the great freeze winter of 1963. Barrow only played one more game that winter until normal service resumed on March 2nd. That was on 16 February when the pitch was temporarily thawed out by an army of volunteers to allow the home game with Brentford to go ahead. Seems like yesterday.
Was anybody there on Christmas Day 1957 ? Barrow 1 Tranmere 4. The last time I think that Barrow played on Christmas Day.

That dwarf from Lancaster that used to be their only fan who’d come to Holker Street after we’d taken hundreds there every year, that was a proper festive game

Wasn't he the guy at Hyde and not Lancaster, unless I missed him at Lancaster?HenneysKnee wrote: ↑Thu Dec 21, 2017 5:42 pm That dwarf from Lancaster that used to be their only fan who’d come to Holker Street after we’d taken hundreds there every year, that was a proper festive game

0-0 draw with Lancaster many years ago. One of those bitterly cold days with the wind whipping in. I had managed to persuade a couple of non regulars to attend, promising a goal fest, you know the script when that happens and in typical Barrow fashion, we delivered a forgetful performance. He still brings it up that he's just about got the feeling back in his toes.

Re: FESTIVE BAFC MEMORIES
Mid Eighties. Boxing day versus Wukkie. Had come home to see my parents for Xmas and for the annual sledging of the six fingered cousins. In particular, one cocky little weedy b*st*rd playing up front for Workington who went by the nickname of "shakey" due to his habit of forcing keepers to sit down before stroking the ball into the net. His name was Carl Burdon. Little was I to know that 5 years later he'd be my brother-in-law. He's now a cocky little fat (grey haired) b*st*rd.

Can't remember the year but a few of us went to Fleetwood away at midday and carried on to a Manchester United game later in the day. Boxing Day/New Year's Day 80's/90's possibly? United were worth watching then! AFC always worth an awayday.

Top of the table clash against Leek Town that went ahead despite a white and frosty looking pitch maybe Christmas 96, Lee O'Keefe made it 2-0 to the good guys and then the Leek players started complaining about the state of the pitch, much to our delight...

Re: FESTIVE BAFC MEMORIES
Wasn't Xmas but new year 99.. So kind of festive! Was rumoured that barrow was to be the last football of the century and possibly televised.. Can't remember if it was or wasn't.. But the brave lad who I reckon could have been the very last football streaker of the century.. Does anyone else remember it? Can't remember who we played either... Just how funny it was at the time!
Re: FESTIVE BAFC MEMORIES
Just after Christmas I think that one was, possibly early January. Players all had to wear trainers as the pitch was so hard. We won 3-0, Karl Marginson scored a screamer on the half volley and Alan Fahy scored a sublime chip over the keeper.John_Bucks wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2017 7:57 am Top of the table clash against Leek Town that went ahead despite a white and frosty looking pitch maybe Christmas 96, Lee O'Keefe made it 2-0 to the good guys and then the Leek players started complaining about the state of the pitch, much to our delight...

Most recent the guy who equalised for Wrexham a few years ago late on with a 30 yard rocket...
Re: FESTIVE BAFC MEMORIES
The game in which Bob Knox came on as sub and saved a penalty against Doncaster was a Boxing Day game, I believe.

Stood behind Ray Wilkie for years. Best education I ever had.
