Which team will fill the last remaining relegation spot?

After yesterdays results it seems as if the last relegation place will be between Hartlepool United, Solihull Moors and ourselves. Taking that as a starting point I looked at the remaining fixtures of all three teams and the order in which they will come and my initial thoughts are that it will be very very close at the end and I am not confident we will avoid relegation.

Would be very disappointed if we went down. Not so much because we particularly deserve to stay up but because there is so much crap around us. We need a win quickly to put pressure on others. Back to back wins for any team in the bottom 8-9 would probably feel like nirvana.

I hesitated to post this before the Wrexham-Chester game had finished but a 2-0 win for Wrexham means that Chester remain 6 points behind us having played 3 games more and with a much worse GD. Apart from confirming that Chester along with Torquay and Guiseley appear to be beyond redemption it also suggests that Barrow v Chester on the last day of the season is increasingly unlikely to a be a fixture in which BOTH teams would be needing to win to stay up. For that to happen the survival requirement I think would have to come down below 50 by a 2-3 points. Possible but not looking too probable at the moment.

Because of wins for Halifax and Maidstone yesterday things may feel a bit bleak. However, Halifax triumphed against a horribly weak Woking who now dont seem to be able to win at home as well as away. At 43 points Woking are not yet safe by any means. Maidstone got their first win in umpteen in the 88th minute against Torquay. Will it kick start a late revival? Maybe but they have a few difficult games still to play.

Hartlepool may hold the key to what happens ultimately but things up there are pretty unpredictable. Have shown resilience in the last two games against decent opposition but only one point to show for it. Who knows what going to happen off the field. Clearly our game a week Tuesday is a genuine six pointer. Unless we can get a result at Maidenhead next Saturday, it is probable that we will go into that game in the bottom four. It would be nice to say that the Solihull bubble had burst but their loss came at Sutton which was no better nor worse really than our loss at Macc. They also play three times in the next week - away at Gateshead and Bromley on the next two Tuesdays but home v Torquay next Saturday. At the very worst I think they'll take three points from that one.

Lastly worth bearing in mind that Maidenhead our next (away) game, crashed 7-1 at Gateshead yesterday and have to play at Boreham Wood on Tuesday before taking us on this Saturday. Didn't think we'd get anything from the Macc game. But we should be looking for a point at least this weekend.

I mentioned in another thread on here recently that the battle to stay up will be fought between ourselves, Hartlepool and Solihull Moors. Someone also mentioned Maidstone United due to their continuing lack of success - however they won yesterday.

We NEED to beat Guiseley away and have home success against Hartlepool and Chester + 5 points from our other fixtures in my opinion, to stay up. I have a feeling that Solihull Moors will have guaranteed their safety before us.
I've had an idea for some time that our final game against Chester could be the fixture that will determine our future ...

Took my Wrexham supporting grandson to the Chester game today. For an hour I was full of trepidation. Chester were the better side and Wrexhams fans,many who think they are far too good for the NL, were giving them grief.The introduction of Akil Wright seemed to spark them into life and Chester a team full of inexperienced youngsters began to flounder.They are still six points behind us and we are three games in hand. Still feel Maidstone are there to be caught. Their win yesterday was their first for months and it was only against a Torquay team equally in freefall.

Watched the game on TV and it looked a pretty typical Top versus bottom encounter. Thought Chester played with a lot of spirit and matched Wrexham for 60 minutes but ultimately fell to a couple of decent finishes. Predictable I guess.

Dont think we really need to consider Chester as real rivals for survival and even if they were to finish above us I still think they'd probably go down. They have nine games left are six points behind us with a vastly inferior GD. Effectively they'd need a minimum of three of those games to overhaul us and for us to lose all of our next three games to get back on level terms. Even if that happened I doubt Solihull or Hartlepool would be anything less that 4-5 points above them at that point and this would require another couple of games to overhaul assuming either of those teams had hit a brick wall. If Chester can arrange all of that then they might be in a position to come to us on the last day with a chance of staying up. But those are pretty long odds.

Its approaching "Nike" time for the bottom. This is when the season doesn't so much come down to just points but a game by game scrap. I say Nike time because it reminds me of the story about the two guys running through the bush in Africa trying to escape from a chasing lion. One guy stops and starts putting on a nice pair of Nike's. The other says "Why are you doing that, you cant out run a lion". "I dont need to outrun the lion" he replies, "I just need to outrun you".

Expect the views from certain parts of the forum on the outcome of the game on Wednesday to include the following: (a) If we LOSE : "Told you so. We're dead and buried"; (b) If we DRAW : "Told you so. Relegation still looking very likely"; (c) If we "WIN" "Told you so. We're near enough safe now". Answers to which would be (a) We're not dead n buried and still have 10 games left to play; (b) We're still above Solihull and Hartlepool and have games in hand on both and (c) Much joy but we're still at least 2 wins from being able to be confident of safety.

However, anything we do get on Wednesday will be magnified by the points from Saturdays game.
