Not exactly a Cross Bar offer but I had a text off Billy Gilmour last night - basically asking what time the bar opens tomorrow (as footballers of that era would!) as he and Messer are coming down for the game.
I informed the club of this this morning and they've invited them for a few drinks, pictures and a bit of pre-match hospitality. So for those who were around for that remarkable 1990 FAT winning team and might perhaps like a chat, Billy, Messer and Lee Copeland will be around the Cross before the game, probably knocking on the door...!

I was asked to see if any other ex FAT team players would like to turn up but with it being very short notice the ones I could get hold of all had previous arrangements.

Top lads. Loves Billy Gilmour and his Ribena berry head. Always put areal shift in and popped up with some important goals. Remember taping his FA cup goal at Whitley Bay. Bet the bar takes some hammer!

Yes. Billy was a midfield grabber who got possession and like proccy gave the ball to the most gifted Kenny Lowe who at this level was a class act. Sublime performer.
Gary messenger....came from reds as a striker but Wilkie concerted to centre half and he was very good too.
Always recall billy Gilmour scoring at colne away in trophy semi. Huge attendance by us and they were beaten from that moment.

Great to hear of the interest from Billy Gilmour, Gary Messenger and Lee Copeland. Billy was too often a sub (including at Wembley) but was an immensely useful performer for us and a real character. He had such a knack for popping up with goals at important moments.

Billy Gilmour scored the best goal I've ever seen by us (certainly in Non-League days and a contender even when going back and including League days). I could be wrong here but IIRC it was a 2-1 win over Kidderminster in late 1989 (or was it the 1-0 win over Kettering two weeks earlier in which Gilmour also scored??? . . . it's just the early dementia kicking in here . . . )

It would be impossible to do it justice in words, suffice to say it was a sweeping move that covered the length of the pitch, starting at the Steelworks End. Gilmour was involved at that end, deep in defence, and then popped up at the far end of the pitch, the HS end, to finish off a move of total poetry and team cohesiveness. Steve Higgins, Cowps, Neil Doherty and Ian Burgess were all instrumental in the move, the latter without even touching the ball by performing a perfect dummy and letting the ball run through to Billy who had, by that time, run 100 yards to complete the move. I am sure that back in those days we were in the habit of having somebody filming whole matches from a position on the flat roof atop the buildings in the corner nearest to Asda. Somebody must have that video and if they do, please can you try and arrange for someone to hook the footage up on here so that we can see once again this greatest of team goals!

Gary Messenger was such a good utility player and always did a good job for us whether leading the line up front or as a ball-playing central defender.

All part of a bunch of good lads from a golden period in our history and it's good to know they still show such an interest in our fortunes.
