I can't understand why people keep pushing this. Why would any player or manager in the north of England want to come to Barrow if they trained here?

We can't afford top end wages in the this division, so if you take what we might offer players in terms of salary. They will probably would rather take a lower wage in the division below but have smaller expenditure and time travelling.

Staying in the Manchester area is key to allow us to be able to attract players that are good enough to stay in this league. If we train near Barrow then we might as well to go back to part time.
+1. The reason as to why the Rugby can do this, I believe, is because most of the players are local.

That isn't the case with our squad and therefore the current strategy is best, as it maximises our potential. By moving to Barrow, it is likely to put off some players. Our location already puts us at a disadvantage, in general.
But that's my point.

If moving to Barrow puts players off - don't sign them!
I'd rather see eleven local based players busting their guts for the badge on their shirt opposed to some so called NL 'professionals' worrying about traffic jams on their way home...

I bet if we were playing in NL North with a team full of passionate local lads or players who lived/trained here our attendances would increase. I'd put money on it!

The current crop of players are more than dedicated to the cause. Your comments would have more validity if we were paying players who weren't giving their all. However, our league position alone shows that isn't the case.

I would much rather we move forwards as a club, not backwards. If that involves local players, fantastic. However, the current group of players have been great and if you're suggesting they don't give their all, I beg to differ. Why change a formula that has a lot of space for growth? Training in Manchester maximises our chances of moving forwards as a club. I totally understand why moving to Barrow could provide problems and that's why we made the move in the first place.

Attendances will increase if we maximise our chances of success. The more positivity surrounding the club, the better chance we have of enticing fans. That can be achieved with the current model, without having to sacrifice a drop in level (which I find rather strange, why do this to appease your wishes, especially when it isn't a guarantee?) Next season could be extremely prosperous if the right additions are made and we keep hold of our talents.

Half the problem is that no matter how well we do, we still have people complaining and trying to change things. As you slyly put to my message:

If we were playing in NL North with a squad of local players, we'd be relegated. And no nobody would come and watch us then.

Honestly, the postcode on a footballer's council tax bill has no bearing whatsoever on their worth to the fans.

250-300 max. First two games against Sheffield and Dewsbury (which clashed with Liverpool v Man Utd and City v Chelsea) they also had a decent crowd.

The Rugby are averaging well over 1500, through a cracking marketing campaign, with a big focus on kids.

Took my little one the other week and it cost a fiver to get in if we went before 1pm. Loads to do when we got in (facepainting etc) and we spent a small fortune on food and drink. Came home and she wants to go again.

Didn’t take her today as it was so cold but despite the weather, there was loads of kids there, with free t-shirts they’d been given and big queues at the food and drink stalls taking in a bit of extra cash. At the end they were having photos with players etc and went out big massive smiles on their face. 1700 odd there after 3 poor results.

They’ve had a poor start to the season in all fairness but with a bit of effort, you can get people in! For me, the football seems to be all about what they can get short term and not about the long term gains. £2.50 a game off if you buy two games is hardly enticing is it?

Bang on the doors of schools and local clubs with real offers that will get them in and make it something that they look forward too every week. Not once a year. It not only gives a bit back to the community but it gives the place a bit of extra buzz - like the Salford game. Imagine the buzz they would’ve felt going home after yesterday’s late drama.
So how many Widnes fans were there?
They have a big away following....

The entertainment is definitely what attracts them, which is my point. Whether they continue to go remains to be seen but many of us went to the football at that age and have stuck with it through the rough times!

We can’t just keep having the odd push and complaining the town doesn’t back us. We live in an area with large poverty issue. Offering £2.50 off a game isn’t going to appeal to the majority of the town and make much of an increase in attendance - point proven over the last two games?

Interesting post - but very little to do with the topic of this thread. However; I take your point.

You state that your child wanted to go again after her visit to Craven Park and you also state that the kids had big smiles on their faces after the game - even though it was another poor result for The Raiders. I think those two statements of yours highlight the 'entertainment' factor which is been offered by the Rugby rather than the Rugby which is actually being played by the team. I'm not sure the entertainment currently being offered will actually transform those kids into future Raiders fans - it will be short lived - those kids will eventually get bored with the entertainment and they and their parents will cease visiting Craven Park. Attendances will also start to tumble soon due to the poor standard of Rugby that is currently being served up.

Barrow AFC should concentrate more on the kids/youth of Furness, I agree - they are the future fans. However; I don't think face painting/giving out T-Shirts is the way to go. More community involvement is needed from the club and its players.

Paul Casson had a point regarding his idea of having 5/6 players living in the town. I would also suggest that the players train in the Furness area - it would also stop clubs like Rochdale poaching our players/manager! There was a recent photo shoot of Raiders players in a local gym and some also train locally. If players don't want to live/train in Furness due to family committments/work etc etc then sign some who will! In the past Barrow AFC obtained positions of employment for many of our players - why can't something similar be done again to attract new players who'll live in the area? I, personally, would rather support a team whose players live in/have a fondness for the town rather than a bunch of mercenaries who look upon Barrow AFC as a stepping stone to prosper their careers. Ray Wilkie had the right idea!

A starting point might be to enter a team of our players for the Keswick to Barrow walk - if Barrow AFC fans are willing to participate - why not the players? After the walk there could be a celebratory evening for fans/players.

And the Radio! I still can't understand why the club doesn't use local radio stations to promote the club. I'm not talking about radio commentaries of the club's games - I mean using the radio to actually 'Advertise' the club and its forthcoming fixtures. Of course it'll cost money but it will be money well spent! If the club can't afford it then why not offer to advertise the Radio Stations for free around the boundary walls of Holker Street for free advertising on their Radio Stations?

It's all about ideas, of course - some will work/some won't. But I honestly believe it's time for some NEW ones!

Surely obtaining positions of employment is not necessary as they are all full-time players - at least for now! ;)

It’s not the price of the game. We have good ticket prices right across the range. Putting it bluntly, Barrow AFC does not hold enough cultural relevance amongst the football loving Barrow public. Every ticket offer and every strategic attempt to bring fans in will have some short term positive impact, but ultimately Barrow AFC needs to be embedded as the team to watch.

Seeing this thread is now about local rugby players, can someone tell me how many of the 17 man rugby squad yesterday were locals?

It doesnt matter where they are from or where they train so along as they bust a gut for the shirt on match day, I think Evatt is getting th best out of them and the players want to play for him. Next season is pivotal as I think with the core of this squad with some additions we can get into the top 7. Would you agreee with that?
You only have to look at the Workington / Kendal struggles. We would be exactly the same as them, they are struggling and they have I would imagine a mostly Cumbrian based squad.

My personal view:

The way the rugby market themselves, I think we can take some lessons from that.

But the cost of running a team and paying players at the different levels between us and the rugby are night and day. You want to go mainly 'locally' based? See where Kendal and Workington are now because that's where we would end up too. And we would be back to mid 70s crowds. Everyone who waxes about the good old days never seems to mention that period.

We are at a stage when we can afford a year more at this level and while we do it, everyone in here is going to have to find some way of increasing revenue to the club. Whether that's volunteering, bringing someone, using facilities more, going earlier and leaving later, raffle, lottery, whatever, At we are going to have to, in some way, do some of the work as volunteers or help with the upkeep and development of HS.

We are the commercial department when it comes to catching the pennies rather than the big bucks. There's 900 odd of us and we could do with setting ourselves a target of doubling our input, in whatever way we can. If we want to watch football at this level or the one below.

I am 100% in support of what's happening with the 21's (although the lack of fixtures sometimes frustrates me when it comes to the rest of the Performance Centre). Eventually though, we might get to an Academy- tbh it's where it needs to go- the best footballers in our region are either subsumed and spat out by bigger clubs, or they don't play enough decent other players to progress. Then, again eventually, we would start to have more locally based players. But drop down a couple of levels and we wouldn't be anywhere nearer that as we wouldn't have a penny to put into development.

Seven, they also have 5 locals on the injury list most of which would have played if fit

Comparing the rugby squad and football squad is Apple's and oranges. There's probably only a small window of about 8-10 clubs that the rugby compete with for players.

Whereas we probably compete with 30.

And thb where the team train has minimal influence on the decision of someone to go and watch the game. Players don't need to live here to be pictured in a local shop gym or restaurant.

We've never been good at selling ourselves. Time that changed. Think big and be ambitious.

All of us on here got hooked at some stage... that sense of belonging and community is what we need to sell.

Everyone missing the point, to get 1500 fans a week, is not gong to happen by reducing ticket prices, having a stall in town selling scarfs, giving out free tickets one week in the hope that fans come back the next. It has all been tried. It’s all about generating an atmosphere on home match day which is non existent and has been non existent for too long. There is no buzz on match day. Why does no one see this. What does everyone say about Barrow away games- How great the atmosphere is that is generated. Get some of that at HS and the word spreads and more fans will come in. Agree. Unfortunately at this present time, there is no way you could fill the squad full of locals, although I do think we need to make the most of what we’ve got when the players are training locally.

Get them out there in the public eye. We’ve got 100s if not 1000s of kids playing local football on a Saturday morning, how much of a buzz would they get if a couple of Barrow players or the manager turned up to their game, said hello and dished out some vouchers for the game that afternoon? What would the parents think of it and what perception would it give to them about the club?

And don’t just do it once a season, build really strong relationships. I don’t think the postcode of the player is the issue, it’s the relationships that the Rugby lads seem to have with locals. Even if they aren’t local, they feel like they are as as they’re in the schools, at local grassroots games, having photos at the end of games and a chat pitchside. A few weeks ago, Joe Bullock who has signed for Wigan recently from Barrow, was stood on the popular side having a pint with Supporters. He isn’t a local lad, but over the 3 or 4 years that he was here, he built a strong relationship with the fans and they treated him like one of their own.

Ive heard a lot of talk about how much the club wants to interact with the community over the last few years, but not a lot of action unless it makes a profit. If you are bringing in people that wouldn’t usually go, you aren’t losing money - your making it through the raffles, bar takings, merchandise, programmes etc.

Disagree. When free tickets has been tried, it’s been a success, but then wasn’t built on. What happened the following game? 5 games later? 10 games later? There needs to be a clear, consistent and constant push over a sustained period of time. That for me, is where the rugby are going right. They’re basically bombarding schools, clubs and social media game after game, with inticing offers.

Oh and one added bonus is that you can sit or stand and have a pint while you watch the game.
