Assists
Assists
Has anyone out there been keeping a record of how many assists each of our players has this season? There is a lot of focus on the goal scorers, but surely our current success comes from being a proper team, where being patient and creating the opportunities is as important as finishing them?

Welcome to your first post on the forum.
No goal scorer can do it alone, or very rarely, but I think it would be hard to keep a check on assists unless someone is a dedicated statistician.
We have a great team.who play for each other and that is one of the reasons for our success.

Re: Assists
If you look at the goal celebrations the scorer always runs over to the person who assisted and the whole team celebrates and congratulates both of them. In some cases they even go to the player who made the assist 1st - for example look who Sam Hird runs to congratulate when Quigley got the 5th against Ebbsfleet - It was Jack Hindle who set it up. It shows a great togetherness in the team.

Re: Assists
What, exactly, is an 'assist'? Take our 1st goal on Saturday: was it Dixon for his quick thinking in turning defence into attack so quickly; Kay for his perfectly weighted pass to Rooney; or Rooney for his cross converted by Angus? Any one of those was integral to that goal.
It all comes 'round again.

Re: Assists
The game nowadays is all about statistics, but all I'm bothered about is who scores.
Re: Assists
Rooney was the Assist. The final pass before a goal.Nigel Bamford wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 10:52 am What, exactly, is an 'assist'? Re: Assists
Sure, I do understand the literal translation of an 'assist' but why that should be given more credit than the others in that example eludes me.BAFC_98 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 11:34 amRooney was the Assist. Re: Assists
Could say the same about goals though, sometimes. A midfielder could dribble past 3 men and the striker could see it over the line. It's why stats can never be more reliable than actually watching a player.Nigel Bamford wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2020 12:55 pmSure, I do understand the literal translation of an 'assist' but why that should be given more credit than the others in that example eludes me.

will be interested in the assists, though; are the players performing as they are expected to, getting into the right positions, and creating chances for the scorer to finish off?
Re: Assists
So, last night I waded through Evening Mail reports, Barrow Lad’s summaries, videos from numerous sites and came up with my own list of assists. I take the points made that the most significant contribution is not always the last pass but that is the main criteria I have used. I have been generous and counted those who have been fouled for penalties and free kicks as the assistor. If you disagree with my judgement you are welcome to create your own list!
Before I share the results I thought I would ask you to guess who came out on top? One player is currently top with 9 assists and two others have 8. Let me know who you think they are!

Re: Assists
Rooney with 9, then Kay and Angus with 8?
Re: Assists
One of those is right! When I’ve had 10 guesses I’ll reveal my answers. By the way I’ve included the FA Trophy matches.
Re: Assists
Brad Barry in the top 2.
Re: Assists
Actually, if you're counting fouls before the free-kick and penalties, it has to be Quigley.
