Re: Decisions being made
Nigel - You're correct on the five teams. Four of your dates are out meaning two clubs in the sequence are in the wrong order.

The Speedway was surely the nail in the coffin for Barrow and being booted out the league. Pictures from around 64-65 show a tidy little lower league ground with good terraces and a full length main stand. ...I believe the Speedway only stayed at Holker St for 2 years after ruining the ground. What were they thinking?
taking that decision shaped the future of the club without doubt.

Re: Decisions being made
Jonty - if the question is why Speedway? then a little digging in the history books reveals that Speedway meets actually first occurred at Holker Street as early as 1930 so there was a precedent for thinking that it might have been a great idea to resurrect.
It was not. As PJ pointed out in his piece above it was a disastrous decision from a footballing perspective made on the basis of making what someone thought would be easy revenue mainly made in the off-season. You've got to bear in mind that the club had no money, credit didn't exist, there wasn't even a lottery at the time and banks would not lend to football clubs. Despite this I seem to recall that the players did always get paid - somehow. But it does illustrate how in those days desperate and ultimately nonsensical decisions could be taken.
THe club didn't even have the money to properly clear the site. The reinforced foundations of the Hindpool end stand were still lying around as rubble at the end of our last season in 1972. Both corners at that end were effectively destroyed and the playing area itself significantly narrowed. It was a disgrace and like PJ I've never really been one of those to have blamed Ronny Radford, Hereford United or MOTD for our demise. It was a truly Barrovian affair.

Re: Decisions being made
I thought I read in one of the articles that the National League were going to get a vote on ending the season, then a vote on promotion or null and voiding season
Maybe I dreamt it but I've been Socially isolated for 30 years so cannot blame that
Re: Decisions being made
I thought some sort of vote or the results of a vote will happen next week but I'm a bit vague about it - however everything is pretty unclear at the moment. For what its worth I reckon they will vote to null and void the league purely due to self interest and then we will have to wait and see if the EFL will invite us to join them.. But I'm a pessimist.

Re: Decisions being made
The vote is to decide whether the remaining matches are to be played or not. If the vote is to play the matches that will be the end of the matter unless and until the FL and Government work out when football can be played again. If the vote is that the matches will not be played then there will be another vote to decide how the season is resolved. The league will be compiling options for that vote but nobody knows what they will be until after the first vote produces a majority voting that the matches will not be played. Possible options put forward in the event of a second vote would be that the league positions are decided on current positions, that the league positions are decided on a points per game average, that the league positions are decide on a playoff of some kind or a combination of that with one of the first 2 options. There is also a possibility that an option to void the season is included. If current points or points per game are used then Barrow will be Champions. If the season is voided then, IMO, Barrow will be invited to take the position left by Bury to make FL league up to the correct number of teams. The only way I could see us possibly not being promoted is if we are inclused in any playoff arranged by the National League.andyg wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2020 6:56 pm I thought some sort of vote or the results of a vote will happen next week but I'm a bit vague about it - however everything is pretty unclear at the moment. The current state of intentions for the first vote according to the BBC is:-
Of the 24 National League clubs, the BBC found 10 want the season to end immediately, four want it to continue, nine are undecided and one refused to answer.

Re: Decisions being made
We're probably a little way from the stitch up yet Pedro. Nine clubs sitting on their votes probably because they cant answer "yes" or "no" without adding a "but". Some clubs looking around them for inspiration or for non-existent smoke signals from elsewhere. Drag it out and a solution will present itself.
Premiership does look like it will finish behind closed doors in a tight rolling period with all games televised live. Therefore promotion and relegation to and from Prem looks very likely. EFL is committed to finishing - also behind closed doors hence the Prem releasing £120+ million to them to help them do this. EFL should therefore complete their season although this will depend upon when they can re-start as unlike the Prem the EFL cannot sit on its arse for ever. However, promotion and relegation should be retained. Though futures of several clubs may be in some doubt at the end of it.
NL asking its members what they would "like". Fills you with confidence.
Re: Decisions being made
The NL council could have made the decision to “end it” instead of offering it out to clubs. Possibly to avoid any legal challenges if that decision doesn't sit well with a number of clubs.

Re: Decisions being made
Still the National League issue of contracts due to end at the end of April, hence the motion that the season be ended and that a consequent action be then decided upon.
Unless the contract issue (and associated loan player issues) can be resolved for squads to remain intact into May, June, July... then ending the season is not practical in a meaningful manner.
