I thought the same that we were formed in 1901
- however I’d be interested to know who the Barrow was that competed in the Lancashire league in 1893/94

We lost that friendly against current champions of England, Liverpool; however, to set the record straight, I think Barrow might well be up in the all-time head-to-heads against Liverpool. We played them over two legs in 1939-40 in the Cup, winning the first leg at Holker Street 2-0 and then going to Anfield for the second leg and winning there 2-1 for an overall 4-1 aggregate. Liverpool had Sir Matt Busby playing for them and also a future manager who proved quite handy, one Bob Paisley. Great managers they might have become but in their playing days they couldn't handle the mighty Barrow.

In the book, Barrow The First 100 years it says that a Barrow team was elected to the Lancashire League in 1893-94 but due to financial reasons they couldn't finish the season, their record and fixtures were taken over by Bacup, hence the Barrow Bacup reference in the League Table.

Thanks for that info - does anyone know any more about this 1893/94 team (and obviously earlier if they played Liverpool in 1892)

Hi I am A Bolton fan who was on your site for rather obvious reasons when this caught my eye.

I can assist a little -

This is from September 1892
" The Barrow Association team expects to have a very successful time of it this coming season. The men have been hard at practice, and when the season opens are sure to make a name for themselves. The committee have retained the services of most of their old players , whilst they have secured some valuable men from Scotland. Indeed the team this year will include several scotsmen. They will have some good stiff matches, their opening game being with Blackpool , whilst the following Thursday they tackle the new Liverpool team at Liverpool. ( The topic of your discussion)
Last season the association game made great strides in the estimation of the Barrow public, and we have no doubt that the good people of Barrow will further encourage the dribbling game in their town, as to all appearances their club will before long make a big name for itself and for Barrow in association football."

From the above you can deduce it competed in 1891/2 when it started I know not . It did compete in the FA Cup preliminary rounds in 1891/2 and 1892/3. It was elected to the Lancashire League in 1893/4 and in November basically had run out of money due to poor crowds , it appealed to Nelson to whom they were due to travel for an advance on the train fares to fulfil the fixture , this failed to materialise and Nelson played a game against Bacup who had similarly sought election to the Lancashire League that season , Bacup then continued in their place.

Not sure exactly when this version of Barrow FC ceased but think it was shortly thereafter

Hope this helps

and genuine good luck to Barrow and you the supporters for the coming season - great to see you back in the League

Interesting. Thank you.

Is the quotation from a history of the Lancashire League?

It was some 'inter-war' special thing or something - not the FA Cup - can't remember what exactly. The last FA Cup was won by Portsmouth (I think) in 1939, then there was the break for all of WWII.

No its from some old copy newspapers i used during some research - Lancashire Evening Post

One further thing - club was elected into the Lancashire association in August 1889 as Barrow in Furness , though I believe for a while it played under the name Barrow Association

Also if this helps theres this quotation:
September 3, 1892
The Barrow Association Club have got their house in order, and with the new blood, and plenty to choose from, the team should show itself to the front. Blackpool are the first to set the ball rolling at Barrow to-day.

Amber and black is Barrow’s new colour. They meet the new Liverpool team on the old Everton ground on Thursday next. Fenton, Steel, Saddington, Glen, Conway, Peacock, and Kenyon are amongst the eleven to do duty for the Furnessians.

Great regret is expressed that the late secretary, Mr. Wilcock, who has done so much to establish the game in Barrow, has been compelled to sever his connection with the club, of which he is still an ardent supporter.

That is a fantastic quote. Puts a nice spin on the Lancashire/Cumbria debate - we’re just all Furnessians. Great find.
