I'm glad the map of Little Park has been interesting for some, I concur with Stephen Leonard's sketch that Yarlside Road hasn't moved much so the ground is underneath the bungalows

I don't know the other side of barrow as well but the stories above are great

If anyone is looking at old maps to try to find the Ainslie Street ground then the date of publication is in the bottom left corner. The date of actual measurements on the ground could be 2-3 years earlier than that

Yes, I see what the pair of you are saying. I think I misread the location of the Ship Inn on the original map. Is it more or less where the number 502 is written?

On the map the words 'Ship Inn' are on the same side of Yarlside Road as the football ground and tennis court which is curious as the 'Ship' is on the other side of the road these days.

I think that is just to do with spacing on the map

If you notice the Roose House wording is on the other side of the railway but Roose House has always been in the same place on the right hand side of the tracks

The ship in hasn’t moved in it’s history just the words on the map

Ainslie Street is problematic. None of the maps from the turn of the century appear to show not only a possible ground but anywhere it may have been.

The earliest named instance (EDIT: for the Strawberry Ground that) I have found comes from the 1930s - the Furness RUFC location which has been said to be where Barrow first played, changing above the stables at the back of the nearby Strawberry Hotel.

Looking again at maps around the turn of the century, I realise that I have tended to look at the site south-west of Ainslie Street at the Devonshire Road (now Wilkie Road) end. Much is know as The Griffin after the British Griffin Chilled Iron and Steel Company that occupied the site for just over twenty years from around 1899. Prior to this there was already an extensive complex marked New Iron Works which British Griffin perhaps bought.

It could have been that the ground was at the other end of Ainslie Street towards Abbey Road but the north-east side was substantially under development fifteen years before the club's move to Ainslie Street from Little Park and streets were being also developed then on the south-west side.

The centenary book tells us a little about the Ainslie Street ground. "A more central location" (than the Strawberry Ground) A site which had problems "as there were a number of ridges running across the field". Supporters visited the ground "night after night" to get it ready and build a fence. A large wooden hut was bought to be the changing room and a bath was fitted. "However there were limitations as to what could be done and the playing area was never of a high standard. A further problem was the decided slope from touchline to touchline."

I wonder then if the ground might have been at the Devonshire Road end but on the north-east side, roughly where Titchfield Street and Romney Road are now?

(In fact the club's stay at Ainslie Street was less than a single season since the pitch "had a tendency to look more like a ploughed field than a football pitch and was given to holding pools of water". "On March 18th 1905 the club switched the game with Padiham to Little Park, Roose and it wasn't long before Little Park became the club's third permanent home".)

Don't think it was on the Romney Road side as there were houses built there and owned by the Duke of Devonshire from 1853.
I read once it was at that end of Ainslie St but on the other side of the road on Ainslie St.

Nigel . . . thanks for putting that second survey online as I was puzzled by its absence (although it's on the Barrow AFC Twitter site) . . . but, mods, can we put it in a new thread?Just thinking that many might see the Thread Title for Vote 1 and not realise Vote 2 is hidden away in here. A bit concerned as Vote 2 is supposed to finish by this evening . . .

That's interesting - do you have a source for that?

On the 1873 map at "Six-inch" from the OS County Series there is no housing development of Ainslie Street - whose eastern end doesn't follow the modern course - save for half a dozen or so houses somewhere close to opposite the bottom of where Harrogate Street would eventually be created. Possibly part of this block.

The 1889-90 revision of the OS "Six-inch" was published in 1895 and shows no development of houses off Ainslie Street - now on its current course - to the north-west of Hertford Street.

The 1910-11 revision of the "Six-inch" was published in 1916 houses were shown on the north-east side of Ainslie Street, Titchfield Street, Poole Street and Gosport Street developed with just the start of development on Romney Road, Dudley Street and Newport Street. Perhaps development was paused during WW1?

By the time the 1931 revision of the "Six-inch" was published (in 1942) the streets and the inter-wars estate took the form we know today.

Naturally, production of a maps lags reality on the ground - but sixty years would be unusual.

Interesting to note other developments through the sequence of maps - in particular the development of our ground and the brickworks site. Note on the second map the location of the first clay-pit on the latter. Perhaps this was the origin of the "rubbish tip" often referred to and clay workings were filled with household refuse to create space for the ground?
