Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.
Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
That is a fair point, but it's also because good managers will inevitably be in demand. If we ever get a really good manager again then the same will happen.
IE left us for a significant step up in terms of the club he went to, regardless of what people thought or said about it at the time. The way people have allowed his departure to cloud their view of him as a manager is quite laughable really.
Regardless, none of that is really relevant to the original question which was would we be better off points wise if Evatt was still here now. I think it's very difficult to argue that we wouldn't.
Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
That's what I'm saying though - we might not be any better off because we would be having to start searching for a new manager and all the downsides that brings. It's too simplistic to say we would be better off.Kieran wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 12:52 pmThat is a fair point, but it's also because good managers will inevitably be in demand. Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
It's all very subjective, evatt did a great job at barrow no doubt, and effected many changes around the club, but was fortunate to have a board that backed him. I do think the wheels were coming off a bit towards the end of his tenure mind, so not convinced it would it would have panned out as well as folk think., but we'll never know.

Totally agree here, you can't compare us with Harrogate. They've flowed seamlessly from the play offs to L2 with very similar squad same manager and not had long lay off due to play offs. Also our injury list down the spine of our team hasn't helped. Where do you think they would be if they had our problems. We are making progress blending the team together, 3 draws out of 5 games is good when you look at the problems we've faced.mickmike wilson wrote: ↑Mon Oct 12, 2020 8:17 pm Dunny’s New, Backroom staff are New, Half the players are New, L2 is New to us, An elevated expectancy from our fan base is New, Half the bluudy ground is New, Half the club staff are New....
Let’s play 10/12 league games before we crucify the guy shall we.

Unfortunately, for some on here, good managers and players automatically become bad if they happen to leave Barrow for whatever reason!Kieran wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 12:52 pmThat is a fair point, but it's also because good managers will inevitably be in demand. I don't understand this belief from some that the "wheels were coming off" towards the end of Evatt's tenure. They just weren't and I think that view is also heavily influenced by Evatt's departure.
We'd lost to an in form Notts County side with ten men having dominated with 11. Prior to that our lead at the top had rarely dropped below a 2 game cushion for several months and we still had one at the time the season was ended. I have little doubt that we would've seen the job through and finished as champions.

Also, some people on here don't back a manager that's got a lot of his best players injured, has big shoes to fill and is guiding a club into its first league season for many a year, under horrendous covid 19 times.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 4:14 pmUnfortunately, for some on here, good managers and players automatically become bad if they happen to leave Barrow for whatever reason!Kieran wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 12:52 pm

Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
I suppose the the thing that I would find interesting to understand is exactly what it was about DD that instantly attracted the Board to him seemingly from the moment it looked like Evatt would go. And I dont mean that in any derogatory way, just out of curiosity. He is I think we agree a very different character to Evatt and I think its probably fair to suggest that it would've been clear from the very outset that DD would not copy the previous style of play. Much of the early criticism stems from not really knowing much about him or what he is striving to achieve. BAFC is the type of club where a manager really needs to get close to the supporters if he's going to be appreciated. You'd think the Board would have looked for that.Cringle wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 5:31 pmAlso, some people on here don't back a manager that's got a lot of his best players injured, has big shoes to fill and is guiding a club into its first league season for many a year, under horrendous covid 19 times.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 4:14 pm

I do think the current situation that he finds himself in so early does reflect on a couple of factors very much under played on the forum. One is that however good he might have been, Evatt was a lucky manager in the sense that he was able to call on the key members of his squad without major disruption from injury or suspension. I actually think the Quigley dismissal v Notts County triggered a view in quite a few minds that the luck might have run out subsequently had the season not ended. I'm not knocking luck, every good side will also tend to have a fair share of luck. Dunn's start has been marred by quite a lot of bad luck. This doesn't help our perception of him.
Secondly, I do think many on the forum overestimated the overall quality of the squad needed to compete in L2, possibly again because of the near miraculous efforts of last season. There was always going to be an influx of players required and these do take time to acquire and bed in. The idea that we were ever going to move up a level and dazzle L2 with our super charged Barrocelona style I always thought fanciiful and was more aimed at gaining media attention which it succeeded in doing, than it actually reflected reality.
Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
I have always assumed that Evatt probably suggested him: "Sorry chaps, I'm leaving for a better opportunity but I know someone you could approach......"Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 9:25 pm

Re: BARROW V Orient match thread
ON the subject of injuries, did we ever recruit, get a replacement physio in our backroom team ?
I checked on the official site backroom team only showed DD and Kelly. Also we used to have a stat man.

According to the programme list our physio is Chris Wilding with Rhys Daly who I think is assisting for a short time.
Analyst is Tommy Johnson.
