New manager - Who do you want?

I have never looked upon us as 'little, old Barrow' and I can't say I've ever heard anyone within the game (not talking fans/media for whom size seems to matter) refer to 'little, old Barrow'. Whether we were playing Southampton/Leicester, Middlesbrough/Sunderland, Guiseley, Altrincham.....anyone, it 's only ever a question of whether my team can beat your team irrespective of our relative positions in the league.

We are not little, old Barrow. Never have been. We are Barrow, now one of 92 league clubs, well-run and stable. We can pay £x. If that interests you as a manager, welcome. If not, cheerio, you've missed an opportunity.
Don't let the old man in.

I think little old Barrow was the impression given by Dunn's radio interview after his first game in charge. He may not have said the words but the impression perceived by many is that's what he meant.

I didn't hear the interview but I also got the impression he referred to it as 'your club' not 'our club'.

In terms of salary a manager would expect to receive in line with or slightly above the highest earning player. So for us that would be around £2,000 per week. I doubt that figure is really negotiable but of course there will be bonuses to consider as well as length of contract.

We are a League Two club now so there should be plenty of applicants. I can't see any reason why somebody like Flitcroft shouldn't be interested - his last management job was at this level and more recently he was assistant to Keith Hill at Bolton. It seems like a good fit for him from both a footballing and geographical perspective.

Barrow is one of the smallest clubs in the EFL and always will be by virtue of the size of population. However, there are a few other clubs in the same situation, which have managed to progress well above their perceived station because they are well run and well managed. Accrington are a prime example and, at a higher level, Burnley.

From what I've read about the potential candidates, I thought David Flitcroft would have been a good choice but when it was pointed out that he was Gary Flitcroft's brother and David Dunn is Gary Flitcroft's business partner then I'm not sure that he would be interested. However, we will see.

Michael Jolley is still the betting favourite. He did a good job at Grimsby - saved them from relegation and improved the following season, brought through young academy players, played attractive football and was big on community projects. It seems like almost all of their fans were disappointed when he left and he took the time to personally respond to hundreds of supportive messages on twitter.

However he was dismissed for an expletive-laden rant at reporters, swearing 58 times in four minutes... some might say that shows passion but for me it is indicative of an enormous ego, questionable temperament and somebody with an inability to handle criticism.

I read that and was surprised considering he is a very smart fellow being a Cambridge graduate and a stock market trader in London and New York. Sadly, par for the course these days, I suppose. My father was an electrician in Vickers and I never heard him swear anytime in his life. However, Jolley does have a decent managerial record and he also has an Elite coaching badge so his football credentials are excellent.

Quite. Or, we could go for another Mr Nice Guy from the same mould as DD.
Away with ya. Jolley would be the ideal candidate, someone that wont take and, put up with crap!.

I would imagine he's in the Last Chance saloon now football-wise and perhaps looking to finally prove himself and get some stability into his life and career. I also think he would do a good job for our club.

Didn't one of our former managers have to apologise for a bit of an expletive rant on BBC RC? I'd take someone with his passion for the job and club any day. :)

Was that the one who offered to fight everyone as well?

I got ridiculed on here a bit back then when I said that Manager needed some help with his health and mental condition at that time. A good guy who should have been on sick leave back then I thought.

He gave a very honest interview on Radio Cumbria a few months back admitting the job affected his health and personal life and he has no intentions of ever going back into management. A scout for Millwall now IIRC

Nice guy David Dunn who swore at the Oldham fans and called them cockroaches? Dunn failed due to his managerial shortcomings not because of his perceived 'niceness'.

Jolley could well be appointed but that incident shouldn't be looked upon favourably. There is a way of conducting yourself - flying into foul-mouthed tirades isn't it.

Agreed. It shows a lack of control more than an excess of passion.

Not read the thread past this post but it [SwearFilter] me off that much I had to comment, Not picking on the poster here as loads of people say the similar jibe, “Can’t afford xyz”

The correct candidate comes with a price you have to pay to get the results you’re wanting & it’s way cheaper than getting the wrong/cheaper option then replacing them with another wrong/cheaper option who you end up paying for a few years each garden leave, Choose the right person & the right price & get the results we all want & it’s literally FREE as the money the FA give to L2 every year far outweighs the cost of getting it right, Just my opinion.
Can we afford Pocchettino then? Of course there is a limit on what any club can afford.
I thought you would have got the gist of the post without taking it to the extreme 🙄
