Its no secret that the first two people the board approached after Evatt departed turned the club down so your theory about not being able to attract a manager with L2 or L1 track record is probably not far off the mark IMOJim wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 12:37 pm
We can criticise the appointment of Dunn and Jolley and we can criticise the choice of signings by both managers, but we don't know what constraints the Board were under regarding what was affordable. Perhaps we could not attract a manager with a proven track record in L2 or L1, like some of the names that have been bandied about on this forum from time to time.

Re: Jolley out
Spot on Jim. I also got the impression there is a nasty side to Jolly - rather like Evatt had. He's going to need it to drag us out of this mire. Dunn seemed a nice bloke but not is what's needed as a number 1. You'd have never called Shankley or Ferguson nice blokes. It has also come to light through biography's written about Busby and Paisley they too had the nasty side to them.Jim wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 12:37 pmThe root cause of our present predicament was Evatt baling out and leaving us in the lurch. I am grateful that he won us promotion, but I feel very bad that he moved on at the first opportunity (or perhaps it was the second, bearing in mind the Fylde saga). If he had stayed, that team, with two or three strategic additions, would have done OK in this league.

Even Jolley's signings might have been the only ones that met the criteria of being experienced but affordable. As someone pointed out, several of them were coming back after injury absences and/or not wanted by their present clubs. Not ideal, but perhaps they were the best we could get. In any case, I don't think we should write them off yet as bad signings after only a few games, especially with the on/off nature of our recent fixtures.

Re: Jolley out
if what you're emplying about affordability is true then why are we bothering? just let the board then come clean about this but if this is the case then what baffles me is the chairman's remarks on radio Cumbria about "using our financial muscle " if this is true it seems to kick your theory into touch, for what it's worth i don't think it was a good idea for him to say that in public!Jim wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 12:37 pmThe root cause of our present predicament was Evatt baling out and leaving us in the lurch. Re: Jolley out
Must admit my thoughts turned to Norman Bodell particularly when Mr Jolley signed lots of new players. This was exactly what Bodell did, replacing players with those of lesser quality and it took a few games until we realised his bluster was exactly that. Ever since I have thought it pays to be wary of managers who come in and rip a side apart or make wholesale changes in short time.Pedro wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 11:52 pm Should never have been appointed purely for his record in Scotland and Grimsby.
Obviously took some of the players words that they are footballer without checking.
But like Johnson good wordsmith but poor on delivery.
If we go down its our own fault.
He should be shown the door ,Kelly does not want the job but maybe him ,Jason Taylor,Quigley could form a management team for the games left.
I thought Norman Bodell was bad.
Listening to the interview on Radio Cumbria ,the bucks stops with him solely.

Brian Kidd tops them both in that respect. Replaced fans favourites with waifs and strays from the streets of Salford.MikeRenney wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 2:17 pmMust admit my thoughts turned to Norman Bodell particularly when Mr Jolley signed lots of new players. Yes when I see him reminds me of Liberace with his coiffured hair
Re: Jolley out
When I talk to my future Grandkids about Barrow AFC I will speak in the same glowing tones of Mr Jolley as my Dad did to me of Brian Kidd!
