Shirt pulling and grabbing hold of players

For all things Barrow AFC. Keep discussions civil and fair, we're all Barrow aren't we!

Shirt pulling and grabbing hold of players

Post by Methuselah » Fri Jul 02, 2021 10:30 pm

I don,t know what everyone else thinks, but these are the two things that spoil a game for me and should earn at least a yellow card.
It spoils the flow of the game and really shows a lack of skill if that is the only way you can stop a player from scoring.
I have just seen these two things going on in the Euros and it is about time they were outlawed, because they have no place in football.
I,ve lost count of the number of games which Barrow have played in where it has gone on and it ruins the game as a spectacle.it was usually when Scott Quigley was heading towards the opposition goal these were the tactics that were adopted.
This is just my opinion but I would be interested to know what other people think as I think it has no place in the modern game and belongs in the playground. :sentoff:

Not as clear cut as it may appear.

Shirt pulling - if it simply involves one player pulling on another's shirt in open play to prevent forward movement then this is already sanctioned. The problem is that it often involves BOTH players pulling each others shirt, the attacker to gain leverage on the defender, the defender to prevent movement by the attacker. Often impossible to assess who instigated the offence. Scott Quigley is a master at using a shirt tug to gain a leverage on a defender to assist in rolling him and getting past him. Generally speaking both players are committing an offence but the stronger player usually wins.

Grabbing players. Problem here is that nobody has an absolute right to be in any any position on the pitch. So at a corner Quigs might want to stand in the space right next to the keeper to obscure his view and hinder movement. Not illegal. But then a defender tries to mitigate this by standing in a place right next to Quigley to prevent his own subsequent movement. Again not illegal. The problem then arises when the players try to move position to meet/defend the incoming ball and physical contact becomes inevitable. Using the arms to maintain a body position when moving is just human nature. When a defender proactively puts his arm around the attacker when the play is not active (eg. waiting for a corner) then a referee can step in and warn the defender that free movement is being denied and an offence is being committed. In active play however, that decision for a referee is more difficult. Not only does the ref have to decide whether movement is being impeded but if its in the penalty area whether that constitutes denial of opportunity. Inevitably they tend to avoid making decisions that we might see as "obvious".

We tend to remember the most blatant cases but the majority tend to be marginal, subtle and often managed. And that's without the "victims" throwing themselves onto the pitch and squealing in anguish.

Just my view.

Shirt pulling lol. [SwearFilter] blatent cheating. The last season with no crowds, players screaming when they have been tackled. Then last night Morata rolling about in the box like he’d been shot, Spain score and he’s up straight away celebrating.

This is what football has become at every level now such a shame but its ingrained in the culture of the sport.
All opinions expressed are my own , not here to cause kick off just enact debate.

The game seems to be more about conning the referee than playing football. As for the screaming words fail me. Should be instant dismissal and a hefty deduction from the wages
Just say no to VAR :sentoff:

That should be looked at retrospectively and punishment given out! It was blatant cheating, especially when he got up smiling! :sentoff:

Because Quigs was the only one on the receiving end, ever. Heaven forfend that any of our defenders would dream of doing such a thing. Don't make it right, but...

Please explain the meaning of "Forfend" not in any of my dictionaries.

English speakers have been using forfend with the meanings "to forbid" and "to prevent" since the late 14th century, and the meaning "to protect" since the late 16th century. These days, however, the "forbid" sense is considered archaic; we only use it (as in our second example) in phrases like "heaven forfend" or "God forfend." Forfend comes from for- (an old prefix meaning "so as to involve prohibition, exclusion, omission, failure, neglect, or refusal") and Middle English fenden (a shorter variant of defenden, meaning "to defend").
My use, therefore, is in the archaic sense of 'forbid'. I'm knocking on a bit but 14thC? No.

I remember a certain Barrow player, (no names, initials JM) who at corners, had a habit of tweaking opposition players' bums...

Blatant cheating that & imho the Ref should have sent him off…..If all Refs started doing this mandatory, It would produce a flurry of reds until the penny dropped a few weeks later & it’s gone, job done.

That's what it needs, managers would soon tell them to cut it out
