Of course there is. People who hail from the area known as Furness are Furnessians. You might not hear it as much but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Barrow-in-Furness is in the County Palatine of Lancashire.
Cumbria is NOT a county - it is an administrative unit which is due to change again in the not too distant future.
I was born in Barrow and I am a Lancastrian.

Lancaster University folk can't even pronounce Furness correctly; goodness knows how Furnessian comes out there.

If only the reporter - back in, er, 1892 - had thought to ask Google. You know, when Lancaster University wasn't even a twinkle in someone's kneecaps. Some folk just don't do the research, eh?walneyroad wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:56 pmIf you do an internet search a Furnessian is an undergraduate at one of the Lancaster University's colleges, not someone who was born in Furness, an area which in addition to Barrow, also covers Dalton, Askam, Newton etc.MisterPleasant wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 4:39 pm

Re: Liverpool v Barrow 1892
Well if you were born in the town pre 1974 as I was there’s not much of an argument. The county of your birth cannot be changed retrospectively.
I don’t think from an administrative perspective you can be both Lancastrian and Cumbrian. Not sure whether the county of birth is given on your birth certificate. If this weren’t so the Queen could claim to be Lancastrian through ownership of the Duchy of Lancaster.
Be what you want to be though. Ain’t a crime.

I've just checked mine - it says "... Birth in the Sub-district of BARROW-IN-FURNESS in the COUNTY BOROUGH OF BARROW-IN-FURNESS"Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 12:21 pm Well if you were born in the town pre 1974 as I was there’s not much of an argument. but it doesn't anywhere on the certificate say what the county was. I was born in 1966.

Here we go again
Lovely conversation about a historical game prior to the formation of our club ruined by an extremely pointless debate over where barrow is
It’s in Barrow
Problem solved

You've taken it waaaay off the point. I'm not discussing Lancashire, Cumbria or any other administrative district. I was defending - and continue to defend - the reporter's use of 'Furnessians'.walneyroad wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 9:43 amYou're dead right there son - dead right!

Well thats a bit of a grumpy response Adam. I can think of countless less relevant and intolerant debates on this forum. Though thats not saying much.
In one sense however you are definitely on the ball. Unearthing the cutting of this game was a work of pure genius. Given the proximity of this game to the start of Liverpool playing at Anfield I wonder whether there may be something in the Liverpool FC archives of relevance.

Re: Liverpool v Barrow 1892
Could you clarify your comment regarding a 'Furnessian' being an undergraduate at one of Lancaster University's Colleges? I attended one of their colleges: University College of St Martin where I studied for my Degree followed by my Post Graduate PGCE. I never heard anyone being referred to as a Furnessian???walneyroad wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:56 pmIf you do an internet search a Furnessian is an undergraduate at one of the Lancaster University's colleges, not someone who was born in Furness, an area which in addition to Barrow, also covers Dalton, Askam, Newton etc.MisterPleasant wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 4:39 pm

Do you mean one of the College Houses within Lancaster University? There was 'Cartmel College' and several others. However, they weren't actual colleges. They were Halls of Residence on Campus. There may have been one called 'Furness'? I can't remember.

You haven't clarified if you were talking about an associated college or one of the college houses on campus?walneyroad wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 2:50 pmLook it up on the university website.Sea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 2:01 pm

My reading of it is that Furness College in Barrow is associated with Lancaster University and the pupils in Barrow are known as Furnessians. Is that correct?

No, Lancaster uni is split in to different colleges, like houses at school... To make it easier for people to meet new people etc. Gives people an identity, I was part of Furness College when I was at Lancaster, coincidentally I was born in Barrow and lived in Ulverston at the time, university of Cumbria is linked with Furness College in Barrowwalneyroad wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 3:24 pm My reading of it is that Furness College in Barrow is associated with Lancaster University and the pupils in Barrow are known as Furnessians.
