My apologies. I didn’t realise that when I was posting on a thread entitled “Solidarity With the Ukraine” that I had to take over every other historical conflict at the same time. I thought it would be enough to express solidarity with Ukraine. My mistake.mall wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 10:45 pm"Doesn’t mean I’m excusing anything Britain has done historically."Bingley Blue wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 10:26 pm truth doesn’t hurt me. I’m quite happy to condemn Russian actions in Ukraine. Doesn’t mean I’m excusing anything Britain has done historically. You need a reality check and to stop supposing what others think.
well said, bravo.

Re: Solidarity with Ukraine
I’m sure that there are many genuine and heartfelt views on various aspects of our history and even the behaviour of our contemporary politicians.
None of this denies any of us as individuals the right to condemn oppression where it so obviously exists. That is a right of the society we choose to live in.
Despite their right to do so, those who seek to use these arguments as a means of deflecting criticism should be aware that these are precisely the tactics being used by those seeking to justify what is happening in Ukraine.

Can highly recommend 'The Rest is History' podcasts which teach us a lot about the Ukrainian/Russian history and indeed a lot of other things.

Loved this quote re Empire from Sathnam Sanhera, British Born Historian and author of Empireland.
"Jeremy Corbyn said 'we need to teach the crimes of Empire' , I've got no time for that.
Michael Gove said we 'need to teach the glories of Empire' I've got no time for that."
It's not a balance sheet. It's nuanced and complex.
Solidarity with Ukraine.

Quite correct Suffolk, there can be no justification for what is happening in Ukraine-in the same way that there can be no justification for the continued expantion, at any cost, of NATO.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Wed Mar 02, 2022 11:02 am I’m sure that there are many genuine and heartfelt views on various aspects of our history and even the behaviour of our contemporary politicians.

When you read his book Sanghera is clearly shocked at the British Empire’s treatment of its colonial subjects and, throughout the book he insists on giving a counterbalance to every criticism of British imperialism.
I'm not saying this person would but generally, right wing commentators who like to portray themselves as being of the centre ground-sitting on the fence-will nearly always, come down on the side of the 'political right' in times of adversity.
