Steve impressed in local football and in our Reserves before making his senior debut in January 1972, going on to score 7 goals in 47 games.
Our condolences are with Steve’s family and friends.
Yes, Gary, did it finish 0-4? What year will that have been, 1977 perhaps? I suppose if I knew my Man Utd's and my Gordon McQueens I would be able to tell you - - - but I don't and I can't! Funnily enough I can't remember that Steve Calvert played in that match but I do seem to recall another Steve (Moon) in goals for Greengate. Additionally, I can't remember Gordon McQueen playing at Holker Street that night (though I can remember him stood in the queue at the "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" ride at Walt Disney World in May 1980 with Bryan Robson (and, just to add to the confusion, not the Brian Robson of Man Utd fame but the Bryan "Pop" Robson from the same era - - - that was the Bryan "Pop" Robson of Sunderland fame - - - or was it Newcastle???). Very memorially murky this!Wintergreen wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 7:49 am I remember Steve being the star of the Greengate United team that played Manchester United in a charity game at Holker Street. United had just signed centre half Gordon McQueen, a Scottish international who was to mark Calvert. Steve took it upon himself to forewarn McQueen in the press that he was good in the air and even better on the ground.
Anyone else remember that game?
Yes, I remember that goal well. I think that was the first game after the Steelworks End roof was removed.behind the goals wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 7:11 pm Good tribute for Steve yesterday dose not seem 50 years since he scored the winner against Newport County at Holker Street March 4th 1972.
