He told fans not to believe “lies’, when Cooper announced Stockport had offered Quigley a contract that Barrow could not compete with. He did very well for us, but when he arrived he had not done a lot previously, apart from a short, reasonably proliferate spell at Wrexham. Nothing at Port Vale or Halifax. Not one of Pedro’s “proven” strikers at that stage. His Morecambe move seems to have gone cold.
Correct and I did whinge about Rooney doing nothing before he came here.
How wrong was I, maybe it was down to Evatt style of Management.
Last season it stuck out like a sore thumb we were short midfield and a forward before the season started and I think we can see unless someone else comes in who can put the ball in the back of the net its going to be a long season again.

I can’t remember in the last decade or so (national league north, national league, league two) when we’ve actually signed a “proven” goal scorer. Arguably Andy Cook had done it when he re-signed from Grimsby, but in his first stint he was only 19 or 20, and had no pedigree. Similarly with Byron Harrison. Nothing before he joined us except in a much lower league. Quigley of the same ilk, apart from a short burst at Wrexham. Can’t think of anyone with a high tally prior to joining us, during the recent past. The exception is Waters.

There are many references on here to a "proven" striker being required, almost as though a player like that can bought from the supermarket. Any consistent goal scorers are like gold dust in the transfer market, they get poached to go up a league or two, or sideways for big money, and they command big fees. To fill the (apparent) void for us they need to be 1.available for transfer 2.affordable 3.want to play for Barrow (ambition/geography/style of play). 4.be unsettled where they currently play, and want to move. Rhetorically, who is available to come in if any of those 4 factors are realistic? It's naïve to think that it's easy to get this mythical "proven" goal scorer. My only answer is drop the overused "proven" word (unless we were to be unbelievably lucky), and go with someone who Wild thinks can fit in and has the potential to do a job.
Spot on. Any player out there that was currently a proven League 2 goal scorer by definition would be hot property and therefore highly unlikely to end up at Barrow. Indeed highly unlikely to end up at any of our bottom half opponents either. Perhaps that's why Cook and Quigley's names continue to be banded about as that is what they are perceived as.

I'm not sure how many goals you have to score and over how long a period in order to be classified as a proven goal scorer. The most prolific scorer in L2 last season was Dominic Telford at Newport. Prior to last season however his scoring rate was poor. Same goes for Mullins the season before. Anonymous before igniting at Cambridge and then dropping down two divisions for the cash.

I’m fairness there aren’t many proven strikers at this level, they’re either an unknown quantity, on loan from a big club or getting on a bit. Lets face it if your half decent in league 2 or the conference you won’t be there for long, everyone is looking for the next Vardy nowadays

Telford recently refused a new contract at Newport, and has made a sideways move to Crawley, yes Crawley, on a three year deal. That’s after being L2 top scorer with 25 goals. No disrespect intended, but that has to be for money. As a well known football organ put it : “ Acquiring proven players like Telford will boost the aspirations of the enthusiastic investors but comes with a risk that if a prolific striker cannot fulfil his expectations, the club’s financial gamble may not pay off”.

I’m happy the way things are going atm, Our signings seem better than those we let go, The methods our gaffer is using, No B.S. Just Pete explaining what he wants & he goes & gets them, Just 1 or 2 pieces of the jigsaw to go.

Remember it’s was Gotts & Stevens 1st season of mens football & both are that bit older & wiser now so hopefully they progress better than last season & chip in with a few more goals.

Gone are the days of setting up not to concede, Being replaced by a high press & more offensive set up should suit Kay, Flash & Whitfield & the forwards.

All in all I’m way more optimistic than previous season & it needed to happen as this league gets that bit stronger each time, Lower mid table with a few decent cup runs would be brilliant. Fingers crossed 🤞

Obviously we’d all love to push push for the playoffs, I was just trying to be quietly confident 😇 As there’s a few berks on here who blow up anything you say sadly.

imho i honestly think if we can grab a centre forward with a decent pedigree(the last piece of the jigsaw) we will be a top 10 team this season although like has been said in other posts it all depends on how the brew comes together :scarf:

Now this is an interesting story though probably should be told under general football. As some may know Crawley Town have been bought by bitcoin traders WAGMI (short for We’re All Gonna Make It). Telfords move soon followed for what we can assume was a very good wedge.

In the last week or two the cryptocurrency markets have plunged and don’t look like bouncing back any time soon. This has resulted anxious questions being raised by CT fans about the bitcoin model being used to finance the club..

This is a boom and bust financing model and could turn very nasty if crypto markets collapse. Whilst there are no Scunnys or Oldhams around this year Crawley is one to watch.

Yes, an interesting story indeed. A new manager in too. Agree that we are getting into general football territory, but anyone interested can read about here : https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... rypto-bros

Our three strikers have all played over 100 football league games. Bennett has scored 27 goals in 139 appearances Gordon 27 goals in 143 appearances and Waters 21 goals in 146 appearances. If these trends continued and if they played 46 goals this season Bennet could expect to score 9 goals, Gordon 8 or 9 and Waters 6 or 7 . It will be interesting to see if Wild will get more out of them and to see who else he can bring in. Quigley by the way has 15 goals from 58 football league appearances which would average him 12 goals for a full league season
