Lance Millard

Former Barrow AFC goalkeeper Lance Millard has died, aged 84. He was signed from Aldershot in 1964 following the tenure of Brian "Yogi" Caine and preceding Fred Else between the sticks. He played 52 games for us and will be fondly remembered by those who saw him play. He subsequently moved to Morecambe FC.

Very sorry to hear about this. As the article says, he was a giant of a stopper. As Mister Pleasant says, Lance came in to replace Brian "Yogi" Caine (who I believe is still with us at the age of 86) and he left us when Fred Else signed for us in the close season of 1966. Unfortunately, some of my strongest memories of Lance came when he was in goals for us in a memorable (for all the wrong reasons) 0-5 home defeat against Millwall in late 1965. It was one thing seeing Lance throwing himself in vain across a muddy Holker Street goalmouth trying to stop Millwall goals but the pain was worsened by the fact that the images were replayed on national TV in a documentary presented by Danny Blanchflower about Barrow which included footage from the match. Even so, good recollections too about an unforgettable character at Barrow.

My first recollection of Lance was actually the first home game of the 1964/5 season when we drew 2-2 with Lincoln. I couldn't get over how big he appeared to me as a 10 year old. You could hear him shouting at the defence and generally commanding his area. The most frustrating part of that game was that Lincoln equalised in the last minute after we'd gone ahead with about 5 minutes to go. I missed the equaliser as my grandad wanted to catch the early bus home that was parked at the back of the Holker St End.... the things you remember! I was impressed with Lance and the general feeling at the time was he was a bit better than Lionel Duffin the other keeper in the squad. Obviously he moved onto Morecambe when Else joined the club in 1966. But I liked Lance - he was a presence in a side that Don McEvoy improved over the two seasons Lance was there. (Coming 21st in the first season after being bottom the year before moving to 10th position in 1965/66 season. We all know what happened in 1966/67). Lance was one of my first favourite players at Barrow. Thanks Lance RIP - hope the official website acknowledges his passing.

I saw Lance play several times during the 65-66 season, my second season supporting the club. RIP.

That Millwall thumping was the first game I ever saw. Not surprisingly I never had glowing memories of him. Sad that we are losing so many of those 60s stalwarts.
