Barrow Soccer History/Art Walk

History people!

Something that has been nagging away in my brain for a few years is where exactly our history stuff is and could you make it into some sort of trail. So, if you were having a walk round Barrow that took in the most important parts on our history, what's the top 10?

Holker St
Town Hall for Trophy return memories
Strand (bit by Morrisons)
The road by the Ship at Roose
The Strawberry Ground (and is it, exactly, the Rugby ground or not?)
Brian Arrowsmith's?

What else?

Also, if you were going to stick murals/graffiti in the town re Barrow AFC, where would you put them and who/what of?

A mural somewhere in the “backstreets of Hindpool” would look good.

Not just Brian's place, but a number of the houses where some major stars of the 60's once resided when the club had properties in the town for players to live in while they were here (eg Fred Else, Bill McAdams, George Smith to name but three).

Not just the Little Park and Strawberry Ground locations where we once played but hopefully one day we might solve the mystery of the location on Ainslie Street where we once had a ground and which previous threads on here have been unable to precisely pinpoint as to where precisely the pitch/ground was (still an outstanding AFC unsolved mystery).

There was also an earlier Barrow FC which competed in the FA Cup preliminary rounds in 1891/2 and 1892/3 and even played Liverpool away in their first season on 8th September 1892. Barrow FC was elected to the Lancashire League in 1893/4 but in November 1893 ran out of money due to poor crowds. My great-grandad's eldest brother Benjamin Walmsley (1859-1892) was, according to his funeral notice, a "staunch supporter of the Barrow FC". Sadly, he died of TB on 7th December 1892.

The entrance to the Barrow Steelworks, which was once a major iron and steel producer between 1859 and 1963 and at one time the largest steel mill in the world. It later became the British Steel Corporation (BSC) which later suffered drastically like so many other industries at the hands of the Tories. It finally closed in 1983.

And at the contractor where I worked the shipyard was always referred to as Maggie's Farm.

I will have to visit the Records Office to see if local papers from that time give any clues as to where the original ground was in Barrow.

Meanwhile, I picked up this snippet from an earlier post on this forum:-

At Liverpool on 8th September 1892, Barrow lost 2-0 with a team comprising W. Kennedy, R.D. Fenton, Steel, Stevenson, Conway, Shentaker, R. Marshall, R.F. Poole, Peacock, Glen and Saddington in a 2-3-5 formation. The secretary was F. Barber. Apparently, the “pace throughout was very fast”.

The same month, a report said “The Barrow Association team expects to have a very successful time of it this coming season. The men have been hard at practice, and when the season opens are sure to make a name for themselves. The committee have retained the services of most of their old players, whilst they have secured some valuable men from Scotland. Indeed, the team this year will include several Scotsmen. They will have some good stiff matches, their opening game being with Blackpool, whilst the following Thursday they tackle the new Liverpool team at Liverpool. Last season the Association game made great strides in the estimation of the Barrow public, and we have no doubt that the good people of Barrow will further encourage the dribbling game in their town, as to all appearances their club will before long make a big name for itself and for Barrow in Association Football."

Barrow 1901 started off at the Strawberry Ground which is now the home of Furness Rugby Union.

30/35 yrs ago I was part of the team that dismantled this entrance & it was rebuilt in Brady s yard where the bus depot is now, behind the Wilkie rd stand area, Is it still there?
