Manager Gary Johnson has confirmed that on-loan defender Mark Ellis has left Torquay United and returned to League Two club Barrow.

Centre-back Ellis, 34, limped off with an injury at the end of the Gulls' 1-1 draw at home to Yeovil Town on Boxing Day, but his second month's loan was due to expire last weekend and he had already returned north before the second derby on New Year's Day.

Gulls fans had hoped that Devonian Ellis might stay on at Plainmoor, but that does not appear a likely option at present.

Saying that he's following us on twitter if that means anything!
Wild said after the Rochdale game it would be announced on Thursday

With so many players out of contract at the same time however we need to keep a decent core. So some of those players that are currently targets for criticism on this forum will have to be retained like it or not.

The financial climate will have a significant effect on the way this plays out. Many of the players might be seeking improved deals wherever they can find them, but they may find a very difficult financial situation awaits. My gut tells me that whilst one or two of our better players may be vulnerable (including those still under contract) the majority of those out of contract will probably looking to do a deal with the club in the same way that Canavan has done. When he signed his extension he was candid enough to admit that security was a factor in his decision making. Its a tough old world out there.
The forum is not representative of the overall ethos regarding the club. As I’ve said more than once before, the forum is largely about 50 windbags (yes me included) sounding off about stuff from time to time “..targets for criticism on this forum” are inconsequential. The forum has no influence over anything or anyone meaningful at the club. Conceited and narcissistic to think it does or might.

Would rather we are signing an out and out right back if bringing another defender in
Hopefully won’t be too long before Sam Mc is back fully fit

Connor Wickham is free agent according to BBC. He has had his injury issues in the past, but if a deal could be reached (pay as you play?) then he would be a perfect answer to our striking problems.

I would imagine he is way out of our league regarding salary. Only 29 nine goals in 20 this season I suspect his wage demands were the reason FGR never extended the short term deal he was on.

Still has championship clubs looking at him and financially even on pay as you play he’d be way out of our price range.

Wild has been on with James Phillips this morning, snippet of which was played out on the 12:34 bulletin.

He knows the fans want a centre forward but it isn’t financially viable for the club to bring in an established number 9 so they either need to look at a young up and coming and coach him into being the number 9 that they want - or need to bring in 2/3 players who will score 6/7 goals and make up for not having that focal point

Something else that needs to be taking into consideration when signing players is how the rising energy prices are affecting clubs. A figure of an extra £100k in this article published today is mentioned regarding Carlisle. We could be very similar https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/sport/232 ... nton-park/

Almost certainly expensive ( wage wise ) , injury prone , looks 'heavy'..... so too many risks ... and probably wouldn't suit our 'closing down' style either. It would just be 'over-paying' for 'a name' and while he undoubtedly has had effective skills in the past ... right now these are diminishing and the risks ( of injury , etc.) around him seem to be increasing . Probably not a good choice for us .
First match : Barrow v Northampton Town : Sat. 24th Sept. 1960 ... won 1-0... ( which was nice )

Same as what Mark Cooper realised was required... Still not sorted

What 'closing down' style would that be? There was one much earlier in the season but there hasn't been one for a long time other than Gordon running around from one defender to another!

This isn`t aimed at you Adam but who exactly is going to coach someone to be a centre forward? , we`ve a midfield who don`t score at all and forward`s who have also lost sight of goal scoring appreciate what Wild is saying but ONLY if it was that easy!

We should be looking at a young, hungry forward from the Conf North level, not the finished article but someone that would jump at the chance of league football. A gamble it may be but it's the sort of thing Accy have been doing well for years.

The problem is that even they now come with a cost
We live in a day and age in football where even players as low as holkers level have agents
