Players that didn’t work out

Running a football club must be a nightmare - just think of the players and Managers we’ve had over the last few years where we’ve had to affectively pay them off .

I think I’m right in thinking Ritchie Bennett had another year left on his contract - so presuming some agreement was reached where he maybe accepted around 6 to 8 months to move on and try and find another club - if he gets one he’ll actually have made money because he’ll have two wages coming in - the one from us and the other from his new club.

Mark Ellis was another big signing that never worked under Cooper - Cooper himself had a three year contract and left inside a year. I think David Dunn also had another year left when we parted ways.

Then of course there’s Zanzala and Rooney when he returned - and who was that big money centre forward signing in our Conference North days that also never worked out ?

It must be hard enough finding the wages for the current staff let alone having to fork out for those that have left.

Hmmm, Bennett, Jones and Devitt all ex Carlisle never did much on the field and generally wasted our resources when we were stretched. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I would think that 9/11 was perpetrated by the US government.

Rooney second time round was averaging almost 1 in 3 for a central midfielder in a team on its arse. Not having that one

That striker was ant Wilson, think he was our record signing at the time and was only just broken by garner if I’m correct

The 5 goals and 5 assists at the end of the 2021/22 season following his return proved crucial in us surviving - he just wasn’t a Pete Wild player hence the decision to allow him to leave. I certainly think his return certainly worked out for the good though with his vital contribution

Oh yes! I'd forgotten about that. Fortunately, on both occasions they were followed by decent people who knew what they were about - Ade Pennock and Rob Kelly.

The return of Grant Holt... Created a lot of excitement but it just wasn't matched on the pitch!

Good lad and a great craic too, considering his profile, he always remained grounded.

I agree Adam - I thought Rooney did a decent job second time around, but the point I was trying to make was, he still left with I think more than a year left on his contract. I’m sure we would have had to pay some of his contract up, to help with his move to Oldham.

It is indeed a nightmare. Get one window wrong it's bad. Two and it's a world of hurt.

And it doesn't matter who it is. I dont remember much whinging when Grant Holt returned.

Holty was runiously expensive, and squeezed every last penny (quite entitled to) of a ruinous contract.

Achievements were getting Steve McNulty wound up enough to blow, and sitting on the Wrexham keeper so we could equalise.

It's a bit like trudging along the road with a rucksack full of bricks. You carry the mistakes financially but stagger on, weighed down.

I'd want Mickey Moore as my rep.
