Just watched the highlights and I can see how it looked like a penalty - who’d be a ref!Bakewell Blue wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 4:37 pm No way was that a penalty - right in front of us.
Stunning goal by Spence!!
However, I have also been watching Spence’s goal on a loop - fantastic shot.
Not sure who the MoM for us was yesterday, they all played really well. Worrall and Campbell look like excellent signings, but the core of last seasons team (Farman, Canavan, Ray, White) all looked strong and I thought the wing play from Newby and Worrall was great, using that big pitch. Spence looked good for his EFL debut. I thought Acqua looked a bit heavy-legged, but he did seem to take a knock. PW mentioned how his hard work might go unnoticed.
Our strength in depth is something new, and that was without Whitfield and Proctor.
Great start to the season - important after losing our last 4 matches of last season.
The noise at the end of the game was brilliant - I was walking back to my car amongst Tranmere fans and I could still hear our fans, probably 5-10 mins after the match had finished!

Did the header back to Spence come off a Tranmere player? Can't quite make it out.

Re: Tranmere Rovers v Barrow match thread
Whilst I’m absolutely made up with yesterdays result I’m not perhaps as surprised at it as some seem to be.
Listening to the Not the Top Twenty podcast before the game it is interesting that we are now considered one the best statistically performing teams out of possession in the division if not the best. Combined with a counter attacking style, to me that makes us a particularly difficult opponent playing away and especially so if we score first.
This is no coincidence and is PW’s preferred style of play. It hasn’t really changed from last season. I think the difference may be that we have players with greater quality to be able to play it this season.

This for me, Pete now has brought in the majority of HIS players to suit his styles of play so it’s surely going to improve & as he said he had to drag lads here last season so they probably weren’t his 1st choices, As our stock is rising his preferred targets were now interested to join us & with 1 or 2 top quality loaners or another signing & January transfer window we just might be dining at the top table this seasonSuffolk Blue wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 3:05 pm Whilst I’m absolutely made up with yesterdays result I’m not perhaps as surprised at it as some seem to be.

From telly, I just liked how much more physical in both boxes we were. He's learned and given the system a fair old tweak from the two teams who gave us the worst mullerings, Carlisle and Stevenage.
However we were direct but decent in possession. Campbell seemed to bring out another level in Tom White too.

More reaction to yesterdays win
I caught up with Niall Canavan who also had strong feelings regarding the new stoppage time rules set by the EFL

Really encouraging yesterday given the departure of our two top scorers, loss of Broughy and that our 22/23 talisman and the league’s top assist merchant and Proctor were missing. Oh and first league win at Preston Park since 1968. Well done everyone!

Absolutely brilliant all round.
Great to see Ex Barrow Paddy Lacey in the pub with the fans and the away end. He loved it.
Onto Bolton.

His young brother Luis has just joined him at Flint Town on loan from Tranmere. Flint were without a game having played Friday night.BarrowLad71 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 7:20 pm Absolutely brilliant all round.

Re: Tranmere Rovers v Barrow match thread
Very good win on Saturday to shake off the Prenton Park hoodoo. Though we looked comfortable most of the time, there will always be occasions during a game when the opposition has a purple patch and we just could not get the ball in the period leading up to the penalty. Was not a spot-kick for me, though can see why it was given by the ref and the Rovers player's reaction gave away his absolute glee at his stunt paying off. That said, these things happen in games. Our winner pumped my heart rate to a level that was almost Barnsley-esque in its intensity. We are by no means the finished article though our work rate was excellent and some of the moves and ball-play were really up there. There was a reference earlier in the thread to George Ray, he made some fantastic blocks and mention him particularly because of his ups and downs last season. Good day out and excellent voal backing from the Barrow support.

Agreed, George was immense, he really was but when he had his downs last season McClelland was there to steady it a bit.
Having said that the defence looked good on Saturday.

Re: Tranmere Rovers v Barrow match thread
IMO George Ray looks a different player playing in the middle of a back three with Feely and Canavan either side of him. The times he looked exposed last season was when McClelland was injured and we played a flat back 4 with Warren at right back. The away game at Carlisle being a classic example.mall wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 12:05 pm
