I have to say this every year, so here it is again - we would not necessarily have got the same draw that Maidstone have got, due to the butterfly effect.

I thought that too, xerxes. However I have since learned that if you believe in the scientific theory of parallel universes then in theory at least, in the event that there could exist an infinite number of such parallel universes then it would be plausible that in one of those universes Barrow AFC will have beaten Maidstone and have drawn Stevenage or Port Vale in the next round. Of course that would only be one of many many many other possibilities.
Think I’ve been reading too much Brian Cox.

It's nothing to do with ball numbers.Hong Kong Bluey wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 7:01 pm Ahead of the EmiratesFACup Third Round Draw on Sunday, we confirm the winner of Maidstone versus Barrow will occupy ball number 45

Of course whoever won would have the same number, otherwise you would have the confusion of two different numbers for teams in drawn games. The number given for round 3 would be allocated to matches in round 2 and taken by the winner or the either/or before replays. The club are right.

Ball placings would be different
Quicker to say Barrow than it is to say Maidstone United
That is just one of example of the butterfly effect as Xerxes is referring to

No randomness involved. In this instance the condition was pre determined. We would have been ball 45. Same outcomexerxes wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 8:03 pmIt's nothing to do with ball numbers.Hong Kong Bluey wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 7:01 pm Ahead of the EmiratesFACup Third Round Draw on Sunday, we confirm the winner of Maidstone versus Barrow will occupy ball number 45

Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
the butterfly would have made us get Liverpool away
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
Now that would have been a draw with a catalyst for a bright future both on and off the field.
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
This is it exactly. I didn't watch the draw but I assume there would have been some mention in the pre-draw intro of numbers to watch out for along the lines of "45; non-League Maidstone surprising League Two's form team Barrow" or some such, which had we won, there wouldn't have been. That, or any number of slightly discrepant events in that alternate universe, would mean the balls would be drawn at a slightly different time, hence no guarantee that we'd be facing Stevenage or Port Vale at home.
No, knowing our luck and our record of crap third round draws (Barnsley, Rochdale; even Sunderland and Middlesbrough weren't *that* good, when you consider the likes of Arsenal and Man U are in the bag), we'd probably be facing Stevenage or Port Vale away.
No bubblewrap unpopped.
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
What a load of rubbish.
Ball No 45 at home to Stevenage/Port Vale.
No delaying pulling the ball out or playing about with words.
Disappointed we didn't get through.
More disappointed that we have potentially missed out on a visit by Steve Evans.
His words last season when Stevenage visited.

The butterfly effect thing is the biggest load of nonsense and gets trotted out every year - you can apply it to everything then. If so and so sneezed while he was drawing the FA Cup R3 the other year, we could’ve had Arsenal away instead of Barnsley.
In the most basic sense, ball 45 was our tie and that’s how it got drawn.

It’s all painfully irrelevant - we lost the cup tie.Moribund wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 9:51 am The butterfly effect thing is the biggest load of nonsense and gets trotted out every year - you can apply it to everything then. Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
If Maidstone get retrospectively kicked out for fielding an ineligible player for instance, we'll be at home to Port Vale or Stevenage. Fact.
Re: Maidstone United (A) FA Cup Rnd 2 match thread
SB . . . it's even better than that - much better than that; I've heard from a pal of mine in the 5th Parallel Universe from ours (based on Linear Arrangement Underpinning Geophysical Hierarchy theory) that the Barrow in that particular dimension won the Champions League last season. Naturally I've made enquiries about season tickets and travel arrangements to go and watch us . . .Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 7:04 pm However I have since learned that if you believe in the scientific theory of parallel universes then in theory at least, in the event that there could exist an infinite number of such parallel universes then it would be plausible that in one of those universes Barrow AFC will have beaten Maidstone and have drawn Stevenage or Port Vale in the next round.
